Where Did You See The Harry Potter Films for the First Time?

tags: , ,

To put it bluntly, I am going crazy waiting to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I should have gone to see it on Wednesday midnight-oh-one in the morning because, well, I can't stand to know that it is getting generally wonderful reviews (especially the young woman who plays Luna Lovegood) and I run in to fans on the subway who have seen it and who say "it is the best yet!" and I have not seen it yet!

So this has made me want to ask you, where were you when you saw all the other HP films for the first time? My list, along with an HP5 trailer, is below the fold;

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone HP1 (2001): I saw this film at midnight-oh-one in the morning on its release day in Seattle. I was finishing my PhD at the time, and was awake all night because I had to attend lab meeting at noon the next day. All my labmates thought I was absolutely nuts to stay up all night to see that film, and teased me mercilessly about it, but I was just so darned happy that I didn't care what they said!

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets HP2 (2002): I saw this film at a special pre-screening given by the Screen Actor's Guild at their theatre in NYC a week or two before the film was released. A friend of mine at the time, who is an actor (and has appeared on the wonderful TV show, Law and Order quite a few times) took me with him to see the film. I was ecstatic to see it. Incidentally, he also gave me his copy of the DVD as a christmas present -- it was the first HP DVD I owned (I have them all, now).

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban HP3 (2004): I saw this movie at a special pre-screening given by Scholastic Books at a theatre on 42nd street in NYC a week before the film was released. A friend knew an employee of Scholastic books and he gave her tixs so she and I could see this film. The tixs, by the way, are probably collector's items because they are very large and have a wonderful picture on it. I begged and cajoled and wheedled the ticket guy to let me keep my ticket. Finally, he gave in. I use it as a bookmark for my HP3 book.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire HP4 (2005): I saw this film with a friend at a multiplex in Tacoma (Washington state) after it had been released, on the day I returned to Seattle for a memorial service in honor of a friend of mine. This friend was an avid "purple martin keeper" who spent many years of his life working to save the dwindling numbers of purple martins in the Seattle area.

Okay, so tell me where YOU were when you saw each film for the first time!

More like this

I saw the first one in the theater with friends in Tennessee, and honestly was so ticked off at what a poor job they did that I boycotted the next two. There is just no possible way to do justice to these books in movie form, and I don't think that they have even done the best possible job anyway.

The fourth book is absolutely my favorite, so I did go see that movie with friends (now in Alabama, having gone off to college since the series started), but just got even madder than ever, so incredibly much was left out of the plot (SPEW, anyone?)...plus I miss the old Dumbledore, he was one of the few casting choices I approved of...

That said, I have been surprised because I actually do kind of want to see the 5th movie, I think mainly because I am hyperanxious about the book coming out next week and any HP fix right now is welcome.

I'm sure I saw the first movie in some local multiplex. No doubt with the offspring.

We are going to see Order of the Phoenix Saturday night at the VIP theatre, which means extra big seats and food service. It's a novelty that I could survive without, but it's for the twin's birthday party. BTW, the twins turn 23!

Well, this will provide some much-needed distraction...let's see...

I saw all four of them with my boyfriend, which I guess speaks to the longevity, against all odds, of this relationship.

HP1, 2001: In Plattsburgh, with him, my roommate and two of my roommate's college friends who had come up specifically to see the film with him. I remember we went to the Ground Round for dinner before. My BF got a steak, and it came with a steak knife. After he cut it up, he said, "We could use a knife like this" and wiped it off and handed it to me. I put it in my purse, and it's still in my silverware drawer to this day!

HP2, 2002: I believe I saw this one at his house, possibly with him and his sister. I don't really remember this one at all.

HP3, 2004: This one I remember more clearly. I was doing my internship that summer, near his house, and drove up just for the afternoon. They dragged me to that awful Golden Buffet restaurant beforehand, but the movie was all right.

HP4, 2005: I saw this one during a sort of YA lit movie weekend, along with The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. He'd come out for my concert. We drove over to the multiplex without consulting the paper first and wound up with an hour to kill. That was also when I was introduced to the wonder that is the Cold Stone Creamery's Dark Chocolate Peppermint ice cream! Only available, sadly, around Christmastime.

Well I must admit to not even having watched the 4th film yet.
Watched the other 3 on DVD at home.

Grrl, Why haven't you seen it yet?
I have the good excuse that there are no cinemas here :o(

Uh, like most other commenters, I'm pretty sure it was in a theater.

well, the reason i haven't seen it yet is because one of my readers wanted me to see it for the first time with him, so i was waiting for that. but i just can't wait any longer and so will see it either tonight or tomorrow, depending upon the lines.
