Susan Richards Responds

One of my readers, who shall remain anonymous, recently purchased the 2006 book, Chosen by a Horse, by Susan Richards, for me. I loved that book so much that I reviewed it on my blog (I usually only review new books, and almost all of the books that I review are sent to me by either the publisher's publicity agent or by the author, free of charge). Well, if you peek at the comments for that review, you will find that the author found my review and wrote a comment on it.

I used that opportunity to write back to her, and she responded. I learned that she has a new book coming out in June 2008 entitled, Chosen Forever: A Memoir. I also learned that the fourth horse that she lives with is another rescue horse -- Willy, a Halflinger. Not only that, but according to her webpage, it appears that the movie rights to her first book have been sold (or are being sold) -- so be sure to keep your eyes open for that!

I have been thinking about a book review that I published yesterday about David Attenborough's Life in Cold Blood. In short, my review of that particular book was positive, but not effusive. Because I focused on errors/ambiguous wordings and on what I think that book lacked, it is possible that I…
I have been pinching myself for the past three weeks for two reasons: first I have good news to share with you and second, I was afraid that my good news was a dream that I'd awaken from. My good news is that I just sent off a book review to be published in Nature magazine. Nature? you say .. Do…
I always enjoy picking up my mail from my post office box, but there are days -- many days, recently -- when walking to my post office to check my snailmail is the only thing that I look forward to each day. And so it was yesterday; once again, I enjoyed a small break by walking to my mailbox…

You know, I actually did steal an abused dog a few years back. She belonged to some neighbors beside my youngest son's first place. Like every first place, it was kind of a dive in a bad neighborhood. I had watched this little mutt from the time she was a tiny friendly puppy being kicked and neglected. She was half a stray at six months old, vagabonding around, looking for food and shelter. The neighborhood was talking about calling animal abuse. So one cold night with a frost coming, I took her.

I can admit to that, because a few weeks later, after the bad weather had passed, I took her back, told her owners I found her and offered to buy her. She cost me fifty bucks and is my best friend ever, my dog Boo.

I'm going to have to read this book. They sound like my kind of people.
