My guess would be a silverfish.
aaron: that's a much better guess than mine, since i don't think it looks much like an amoeba, but .. i couldn't think of what else it could possibly be.

Nope. That's GOTTA be a silverfish.
Our offices are crawling with them (literally) -- believe me, I'm pretty familiar with what they look like! --Actually, I think they're kind of cool looking. I wouldn't mind them at all, if it weren't for the fact they eat paper.
IIRC, silverfish are "living fossils" -- sole survivors of a very old lineage. Coincidentally, they've just shown up in the webcomic Skin Horse.
