I'm going to go with sharp-shinned, even though its legs are hidden. The tail bands don't say much, but it has the coarse breast streaking, and lacks much of an eye stripe.

A magnificent, brilliantly colored Red-Shouldered Hawk. Red shoulders, boldly striped tail, rusty breast, buteo shape and posture. An elegant bird. Well, most birds seem elegant to me. :-)

Sorry for the multiple posts...my internet connection hiccoughed and stuttered.

Pretty sure that is a red shouldered hawk. I haven't seen many of those in my neck of the woods, but they are around.

I'll agree with Sarah on this one: Red-shouldered Hawk (although I'm only going to say it once -- not quite as sure of it as Sarah was ;-). Field markings: reddish barred underparts, red shoulders, striped tail feathers.

There has been a juvenile hollering around my house in the holler (KY) for four days now. It seems to be saying BRING ME SOME FLESH RIGHT NOW! Please. I suspect this particular bird is part green heron, a parent was seen grabbing one a while back. A picture of the late juvenile heron was posted on this site.
And hooray for Finland! rb

Agreed on the Red-Shouldered Hawk. The most obvious field mark is, of course, those red hued shoulders. The Harris' Hawk also has these, but a Harris' is much darker in other coloration, and lacks the rusty barred breast.

BEAUTIFUL shot of this guy.
