I made it! After a day spent sitting in a variety of places (planes, trains and automobiles). I am already having a good time, watching my host, Dave, who is armed with a sling-shot being outwitted by two red squirrels who were stealing seeds and suet from his backyard birdfeeders. I have already seen bird species along the drive from the airport in Kansas City, Missouri to Manhattan, Kansas; Cackling geese Canada geese Mallard Wild Turkeys (4) Common loon (1, winter plumage) Eared grebes (many dozens) American white pelican (dozens, including several with the nuptial "knob" on beak) Double-…

By the time this image pops up, I will be meeting my hosts, Dave and Elizabeth, at the Kansas City, MO, airport. I'll probably be dragging my dufflebag along, while carrying my precious laptop, digital camera, and binoculars -- all crammed into the super-strong computer bag that I have packed them into. Hopefully, the airlines will treat me well and will allow me to pre-board each flight (I switch planes in Detroit -- another…

I thought I'd mention that I have been invited by SEED to an event in my beloved NYC; The MIND08 Symposium which is held all day on 4 April. This symposium is co-hosted by one of my favorite art museums in the world, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and is held at the Parsons New School for Design in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. I am really looking forward to this and plan to write about this event on my blog for you to enjoy.

With any luck, by the time you are looking at this image, I will have finished running around the city trying to get last minute tasks completed, such as buying food for my birds, cleaning my birds as much as possible (I've given up on cleaning my apartment and caved-in bathroom so both are complete disasters), doing my looong-overdue laundry (I have no idea how I will do this one-handed since it involves hauling a mountain of dirty clothes…

Birds in Research The songs that each spring announce when birds are ready to compete for homes and sex have been traced to changes in the brain, according to a study that can shed new light on winter depression in people. While some birds, such as robins, sing throughout the winter, other species of bird…

A film that thanked PZ in the credits for giving freely of his time by appearing in the film itself, no less (of course, the producers lied to him about the sort of film they were making; they claimed they were making a documentary about evolution). So much for free speech, as the fim's producer shrilly proclaims, eh? So not only is…
