What Is It With Hurricanes and Heavy Drinking?

From a CNN story on those awaiting Hurricane John:

Paul Mares, another American, stocked up with a 12-pack of beer at a local store the evening before the hurricane was to strike, noting "it's good to be prepared."

There's only so many things one can do during a storm, after all. And on that track, you won't want to be working at any of the local OB wards 9 months down the line.

I slept through Ernesto last night. In fact, the most inconvenience I've seen from any hurricane since 1998 was a few days without AC, and a dent in my car. The most frightening thing about a hurricane is... the media. And the thought that thousands of people in Louisana were too moronic to walk a few miles to shelters that weren't in a ditch ten feet under water last year, costing this country billions.

As one who has spent the last eight years on a sailboat in the Sea of Cortez and the west coast of Mexico, I can tell you that the man with a 12-pack is minor league. For a hurricane, most expats in Baja would need at least two cases of beer (48 bottles). Keep in mind that a hurricane is a several day event.

well, y'might be chasing a false cause. despite what Mares said, perhaps he gets a 12-pack of beer every night.
