From a CNN story on those awaiting Hurricane John:
Paul Mares, another American, stocked up with a 12-pack of beer at a local store the evening before the hurricane was to strike, noting "it's good to be prepared."

From the San Jose Mercury News:
An evening that started with two friends playing chess and drinking beers ended with one man stabbed to death and another booked on murder charges Tuesday, Alameda police said.
Kelly Scott Kjersem, a 40-year-old Alameda man, arrived earlier in the evening at 1220…
In this special Saturday edition of The Friday Fermentable, here's just a quick plug for a great North Carolina documentary that is screening here this evening in the City-That-Tobacco-Built:

Sharon Thomas-Ellison works hard for her paychecks at Jimmy John's. On occasion when no one else is available, the 19-year-old has worked from 11 in the morning until 1 a.m. at night with just a 30-minute break — and it's okay, she says, she needs the extra income.

The most important thing about the power outages in the mid-Atlantic is that no one expected them to be this bad, so no one was ready. The storms on Friday were stronger than expected, so no one, including the power company, was prepared. That meant that for 3 million homes, the loss of…
Andrew, you're an asshole.
There's only so many things one can do during a storm, after all. And on that track, you won't want to be working at any of the local OB wards 9 months down the line.
I slept through Ernesto last night. In fact, the most inconvenience I've seen from any hurricane since 1998 was a few days without AC, and a dent in my car. The most frightening thing about a hurricane is... the media. And the thought that thousands of people in Louisana were too moronic to walk a few miles to shelters that weren't in a ditch ten feet under water last year, costing this country billions.
As one who has spent the last eight years on a sailboat in the Sea of Cortez and the west coast of Mexico, I can tell you that the man with a 12-pack is minor league. For a hurricane, most expats in Baja would need at least two cases of beer (48 bottles). Keep in mind that a hurricane is a several day event.
well, y'might be chasing a false cause. despite what Mares said, perhaps he gets a 12-pack of beer every night.
