Over at Shifting Baselines, Randy Olson just posted an interview with Matthew Chapman, the original guy behind the curtain of Science Debate 2008. Sheril and I have taken to calling Matthew our "fearless leader," but "fearless, selfless, deeply inspirational leader without whom this wouldn't have…
So this is the first bit of news that we've been promising.... In the latest issue of Science, we--the ScienceDebate2008 crew--have a policy forum article that lays out how this all got started, its implications, and where it's going. Doing the article was Sheril's idea, and she did a great deal of…
About a year ago, we had an idea to make science more prominent on the campaign trail this election cycle: ScienceDebate2008 was born. It wasn't long before a lot of folks took notice and the initiative grew rapidly. Eventually, the presidential candidates weighed in. This week,…
I spend a lot of time complaining about the ineptitude of the science world when it comes to mass communication and function in mainstream society. But all of a sudden here is this Science Debate 2008 effort that is being run with shockingly good style and savvy. Who in the world is behind such a…

Great photos. Thanks for posting them. For those of us who didn't make the conference, it's nice to be able to see what went on besides just reading about it.

So will there be a debate? I've been following your blog and the website in the hopes that it will happen. It necessary and we need candidates to understand it's not a choice, but it's an obligation to address science.

Thank you both for all your incredible work.

Shirley Ann Jackson is one of the ten scientists whose biography (Strong Force) is part of the "Women's Adventures in Science" series from the Joseph Henry Press. (See http://www.iwaswondering.org where "was" = Women's Adventures in Science). She is a great role model indeed, as are the other nine.

Click my name for details of the book I wrote in that series, Beyond Jupiter: The Story of Planetary Astronomer Heidi Hammel.

Shirley Ann Jackson is terrific--I was at a conference with her at Aspen last summer, and was very impressed. Not that the president of a major university needs me to be impressed.
