What a lucky find of such a rare animal. Eastern box turtles are in decline nation wide. It is illegal to take them from the wild in most states.

Eastern box turtles were so common when I was a kid that me & my friends didn't even get excited over coming across one. (Now, a snapper, that was a different story!) These days, as Patricia says, they're quite rare in most places. Sure is a shame.
