I Always Did Like Roger Ebert

From the archives comes this post about movie critic Roger Ebert and the email he sent me.

A little while back, Roger Ebert wrote a column assailing Imax theaters for pulling movies that were about the origin of life, the origin of the universe, and evolution. I suggested that we should send him email and thank him for supporting science. Well, I did just that, and in my email In Box today was a reply from Ebert. Pretty damn cool.

To sum up, he says that he's received a lot of ('countless') emails from creationists who use ridiculous arguments. The criticism he's received the most is what he (and Dawkins) call the "Argument to Personal Incredulity"-"I can't believe it, so it's not possible." In other words, it's the common ID fallacy: I'm not smart enough to figure it out, so it must be intelligent design.

This comes hot on the heels of today's Salon article about David Horowitz's online "Guide to the Political Left." According to Salon, "You just can't separate Ebert from a terrorist like the blind sheik Rahman, Horowitz told me." So if Ebert sends me an email, does that mean The Mad Biologist has links to terrorism? I'm sure if we put our brains together, we can connect to Kevin Bacon somehow...

An aside: Does anyone know what D. Ho thinks about evolution?

Film critic Roger Ebert has been fighting cancer, but he's getting back to work: On April 1 Roger Ebert published a letter to readers of The Chicago Sun-Times that was essentially a farewell to the long-running, widely syndicated weekly program that has made him not simply the best-known movie…
Yes, that Roger Ebert. In the wake of the recent controversy over IMAX theaters, including museums, around the country deciding not to show movies that discuss evolution because of potential controversy among moviegoers, Ebert has written a column taking them to task for it. Along the way, he shows…
I am not a fan of Gregg Easterbrook. He's a pretentious twit who lectures Hawking on physics, calling him "kooky", yet thinks Townes is wonderful and believes in an "invisible plane of existence: the spirit". He makes ill-informed rants against atheists and Richard Dawkins, and has gone off on…
One of the mysteries of my email is that there are noticeable waves of like content that come through. Right now I'm getting a lot of hate mail that rants and raves about how clever I must think I am … which is definitely not a theme that I've been pushing, so all I can assume is that somewhere out…
