About that manuka-honey story ... There was a JAC paper a few years ago warning that bacteria could become less susceptible in the presence of low doses of the active ingredient in tea-tree oil. I am not a botanist and so can't say if the active ingredient is present in oil in the same concentration as in honey, but just FYI.
