Don't panic!

Quite a few people have written to me asking what's wrong with richarddawkins.net…they can't get through to it, and get DNS errors. No worries, everyone—it's good news. They've been experiencing ever-escalating levels of traffic, so to cope with the incoming hordes, they've just migrated to a new and better server. Give the network a little time, you should be able to get to it in the next day or two.

Last week I posted about the increasing problem of incivility at comment sections for blogs and news sites. As I noted at the end of the discussion thread that was started, I plan to return to the topic in depth, perhaps as part of an article or study. My thoughts on the topic are apparently at…
As you've probably heard, the US customs service has, recently, asserted the right to confiscate any and all computers and/or digital storage carried by anyone crossing the US border. They further assert the right to demand all passwords, encryption keys, etc., from the owners. They even further…
I run a blog, not an open forum, and I'm reminded once again why I prefer the former. The Richard Dawkins site is revising their forum. This substantial change is causing a great deal of unwarranted anxiety — people are unhappy (which is fair enough) and complaining, and many are flocking to a new…
ON STRIKE! It's come to this. We've been facing a steady erosion of talent here at Scienceblogs, with the loss of good people like Carl Zimmer and Ed Yong a while back, and with the very abrupt departure of 15 bloggers after the recent PepsiCo debacle — an event that damaged the reputation of this…

See what happens when these damn uppity "hard atheists" start mouthing off? Why, more and more people start listening to what they have to say, that's what! ;)

Part of the traffic load may be down to some relentless and rabid anti-Dawkins ranting by certain people on the BBC website (specifically on the dna mbreligion sub-site). In that respect, it might almost be counted as a denial-of-service attack. Except that I think it's more likely to be neutral-to-friendly curiosity caused by the ineptitude of the negative advertising. One of those "no publicity is bad publicity" effects.

Only tangentially related: I have been having trouble getting to Creek Running North for the last few days. Does anyone have any information?

Thanks,
MikeG

While they're at it, can they add more pretentious shots of a very contemplative Dawkins staring into the distance?

Mind the gap!
