Invitingly halloweeny

Now this is the kind of thing I'd like to have on my lawn…

…except, unfortunately, that I have to miss Halloween this year. Halloween is a Ray Bradbury-esque holiday best celebrated in the midwest, and I'm going to be spending that day in the sunny, cheery, less-than-autumnal climes of Southern California, dispelling ghosties, I hope.

This week's short story club entry is Carol Emshwiller's "No Time Like the Present," a sort of timeless time-travel story. It's narrated by a teenage girl in an unnamed town somewhere in the US whose town sees a sudden influx of tall blond people who behave very oddly. While it's pretty obvious to…
There's a thing I've been doing every Spring for a few years no, privately. This year I decided to tell you all about it because I think you might find it useful. I call it the "Hope Graph." I moved to Minnesota from a slightly warmer climate. The winters here are long, and they are made…
Somehow I think 2017 is going to be a bit more of a Friday Feak Out year than a Friday Fun year... And in that spirit, some freak out fiction for your reading list this year. It'll be a great year for novels highlighted how truly awful the world could get if we let it. For your 2017 reading please…
I'm including here a list of all the books I've read in 2011, as well as some commentary on my particular year in reading. I always enjoy when people post these sorts of lists online and actually rather enjoy doing so myself. I've been doing this for a few years now: 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007. If…

Make sure to let us know if you have time to share a pint with some of us who live in SoCal.

Don't worry, plenty of the ghosts of Hollywoodland there, particularly when you get up into the hills. Kind of more postmodern scary than Halloween scary, but there you go.

Hmmm... sounds great. I'll join you. Too bad on their terrible website, eh? Any information other than dates available?

Beware tiny little fear demons, roving packs of disrespectful "Lost Boys" style vampires, and costumes from Ethan Rayne.

Is this open for public attendance? Where is it held? Is it private invite only?

Arrrgh! Dratted Beyond Belief website!

And if any stragglers happen to get waylaid up into the California Central Valley area, let me know.

It's invitation only, I'm afraid. I haven't seen a detailed schedule, so I don't know how much free time, if any, that I'll have.

What a fantastic pumpkin--and, even better, when Halloween rolls around, it'll be gooey and smelly enough to fulfill its intended purpose: frightening away beggar-kids.

whoa, right down the freeway from me. fire off an email if you feel like having drinks drunk with. i should have my first homebrew done priming by then, i'll bring you a bottle!

Wow, that's a terrible website. Anyway, do update us if you've got free time in SoCal - I'm in LA and would love to join in on any sort of SoCal meetup/drinks.

So that's a.... a Jack-O-Pod? A Cephalolantern? What?!?

I think this is the actual website:

Not great, but slightly better than incomprehensible.

Who needs PZ? SoCal folk can drink without him.

No real Halloween enthusiast lets his jack o' lantern turn to mush of its own accord.

I'm sending this to a friend who likes to do an artistic pumpkin every year. So maybe we'll see one in Toronto - the 'northern lawn squid'!
