We have a venue!

This is my last day in Berkeley, and the last day of the IEDG meeting, and I'm giving the very last talk of the meeting…which means, unfortunately, that the time I've been able to give to local readers has been minimal and is disappearing fast. Here's one last chance. I'm talking at the Art Museum on the Berkeley campus at 7:30, and I'm guessing that it should be done by 9 (maybe later, if the audience decides to lynch me, but this really isn't that provocative a talk, so I should be safe), and at the suggestion of a local I will then retire to the Jupiter beer pub on Shattuck, near the Bart station. If I'm delayed, start the party without me, I'll get there eventually. And I will be thirsty.

While I am on vacation, I'm reprinting a number of "Classic Insolence" posts to keep the blog active while I'm gone. (It also has the salutory effect of allowing me to move some of my favorite posts from the old blog over to the new blog, and I'm guessing that quite a few of my readers have…
I have had a very, very good September. I traveled across the country, and back, twice (with offset credits for my carbon). I gave fifteen speeches, to (I would guess) over a thousand people in total. At many of my stops I made new friends, or was able to get reacquainted with old ones. I even got…
Avi Steiner emailed me with a set of questions that are too good not to turn into a blog post: Being a math/science major at a small liberal arts college, I unfortunately never get the "full" experience of a math/science talk. Since I do plan on eventually attending grad school, I thought it might…
DAMOP is next week, and Tom uses this to talk about socialization at conferences: The DAMOP conference is coming up, and that reminds me of a conference-related phenomenon related to gathering a group to go off to a meal. This doesn't manifest itself when the conference provides meals, so it wasn't…

Hmmm... I may be able to make that. I'll certainly try and if I do make it I'll even buy you a beer PZ.

Careful, you know how far-right the Berkeley campus is!

Careful. Provocative or not, this is Berkeley. They may decide to lynch the speaker just on general anti-authoritarian principle. ;)

dang. i may be able to make that! i'll don my finest berkeley ento t-shirt and bike over... jupiter is a great place!

I'm too far north in Dumbfuckistan to join you, but I'll raise a glass of cold, fruity sangria in non-soberity. ;)

You're going to the Jupiter? That's great--I used to hang out there, years ago. Too bad I live out in Sacramento now or I'd come out to dr--ahem, I mean finally meet you in person, PZ!

Jupiter's an interesting place. Used to be a Chinese restaurant or something, and they have a lot of great local brews on tap--they even stock more obscure ones that are harder to find. If you like West Coast micros, you'll have a blast there.

It's been a few years, but I remember seating (especially on the beautiful patio) to be a limited resource this time of year.

Oh yeah- Jupiter's a good place...

Hooray for all these shout-outs for the Jupiter! My Morris dancing team has been drinking there after practice every week for years and years.

I think Greta and I might just have to stop by...

Well, if I were old enough to drink and lived on the other side of the country, I would definitely go to the Jupiter. But I'll drink a cup of lemonade to your hopeful success at the talk/general science awesomeness.

Great choice! Jupiter's one of my favorite places to hang out. We're entertaining company from Florida this week, though, so I won't be able to make it... Hopefully there will be a next time.

Morris Dancing... and PZ works at UM Morris.
There must be a conspiracy behind it.

Hee hee DLC...I thought about that too!

As it happens, the Berkeley Morris team is a bunch of atheists and pagans, so I told them they should all come join us tonight. Maybe we can do a dance for PZ.

Leon - It's only 60 odd miles to Jupiters from Sac. On a Friday evening it's even against the flow of traffic so you should be able to make it pretty darned quick!

Have fun at Jupiter! I love that place. The Red Spot Ale is my favorite. Looks like some good music tonight. I wish I could join you there but I have other plans. Oh yeah, check out their Triton pizza, it's the best!

So how will we do this, wear a squid so we'll recognize each other? Get reservations (for parties of more than 10) or show up early enough to take over the standing room drinking area? I'm recognizable (that's me on the right in that pic) and I'll wear my white fossil bones on black t-shirt. If enough of us get there early, perhaps we can snag some real estate somewhere apart from the bar.

Alas, I, too, have a prior obligation. Drat! now I'll never be able to get in good with our cephalopod overloords.

School is out, I'm free, what could be easier than heading over to Berkeley to hoist a few with PZ? Uh. Waiting at an airport to give a friend a ride home. Damn and blast! (I have got to stop being so helpful.)

Zeno,

What, did BART stop going to the airport? ;-D

PZ! No no no! Don't go to Jupiter. Go to Triple Rock (just a couple blocks North down Shattuck). They serve a great beer called Titanium. Have a pitcher by yourself.. I dare you!

By b-haemolytica (not verified) on 30 May 2008 #permalink

b-haemolytica, I was gonna say the same thing. Triple Rock is the best beer place in Berkeley, no competition. It's also the oldest still active microbrewery in the US. And their burgers are great too.

i wish i was there. (ii)D, (ii)D, (ii)b. burp.

By genesgalore (not verified) on 30 May 2008 #permalink

Damn, I already have plans tonight or I would definitely be there. Have fun anyway.

BTW Triple Rock and Jupiter are owned by the same folks.

Indeed, I am perplexed as well. What is a "beer pub"? Beer seems like a completely redundant operator in that description. Don't all pubs serve beer?

Ahh! A brew pub! It all falls into place.

I'd jump on the 51 College Avenue line right now if I weren't a broken-down artist manque and at the end of the month! Have fun! You're only eighteen minutes away... Damn, I just can't stand it!

P.S. PZ,

I hope you won't mind if I start the party here alone at home without you... Dance happy lil' atheistic feet, dance!

Darn. I wish I would have checked the blog sooner. Just got back from out of town.

Wow, what an opportunity, I thought to myself. A chance to see the evil overlord in his flowing black cape, tentacles writhing, followed by his cadre of jackbooted atheists. So I went. I went alone but figured someone else there must be waiting for PZ. I strolled around all the tables, but I didn't catch a whiff of brimstone from any of them, so didn't recognize anyone until PZ arrived. I was shocked at first, to see a mild mannered college professor instead of the evil overlord. But then I thought, what a clever ruse, not to reveal his true nature in public. It's easy to imagine PZ in this guise opening a door for your grandmother. And of course, no need for a bodyguard of jackbooted atheists, this being evil Berkeley and all.
PZ, it was nice to meet you, I was sitting on the outside corner between Ken Cope and Rob Brown and left a bit early. Maybe, if I'm lucky, next time you'll wear your cape and give us a glimpse of the tentacles.
(How does he manage to keep them so neatly tucked into that sportcoat?)
A very congenial gathering it was (and maybe still is for all I know, I left first.)

All I saw were us jackbooted atheists from my position between PZ and Greta Christina.

Is there some special atheists supply house where you order the jackboots?
I haven't gotten mine yet.

Gads, I am jealous. PZ, when are you bringing yourself to somewhere in the south? We need you more than the Berkleyites need you. Charleston SC is lovely and I have a guest room. Or even someplace within four hours drive, like Atlanta.

Ah, well...dreams will remain dreams.

Ciao and morning all

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real effort to make a good article... but what can I say... I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.
