I'm sure it was a very solemn ceremony

The guy at the end of the line just adds to the dignity.

Well, this is a new low. I ran across this blog post from a few months back, discussing the Imus situation: Anytime a person is negatively labeled because of gender or race, this affronts our shared human dignity. And we should be especially careful here, for this has not always been such an…
Ricky Gervais has published his deconversion story — I feel a little inferior because he made up his mind about it very quickly, while it took me years to ease my way out of the nonsense. I like his answer, though, especially the last paragraph below. …within an hour, I was an atheist. Wow. No God…

There's a guy in there, toward the end, who looks a lot like you, PZ.

Freakin hilarious.

PZ, there was a guy in that like that looked just like you. Look at it again.

@ Bosch's Poodle:

I noticed that too. How creepy...

I noticed PZ in there too. Nice collar!

And, as to Darth Vader: WIN!

The funny thing is, according to the comments on youtube at least half of the Icelandic people have been there when it happened...
But those priests really took it with grace, even if Darth Vader has been removed from the procession after the video.

Ah, I needed that, thanks PZ.

PZ is that you at 20 seconds?

"What? No, I'm Father Luke!"

Reminds me of the video you posted a few months back: "A New Pope".

Let me guess, at a university graduation procession of the professors in their academic regalia (which looks just as stupid), it is Yoda who follows them.

It's very giggle worthy.

You have a lot of Icelandic readers, PZ. Every Icelandic atheist I know seems to know of your site, if not read it regularly. Oh and Icelandic creationists also seem to be well aware of you!

We seldom seem to comment though...

Keep up the good work!

Iceland

Belly laugh at work. Awesome!

Am I the only one wondering what the context was? Were they doing a big ceremony, picking up their paychecks or is this just what they look like going to work in the morning?

Hmmm. I like the paycheck idea, myself. "Yeah, payday!" "Whose turn is it to wear the Darth Vader costume?" "Yours!" "Aw, man."

haha, that was hilarious. Thanks for the ab workout! #12 and #21, you have definitely added to the hilariousness for me. Nicely done.

"If you only knew the power of myth!"

Wow, that was ballsy. And hilarious.

I mustn't laugh. They look every bit as silly down here (that's what they get for sticking to 17th century wardrobe). In fact I was sure this was Danish from the preview - of course Iceland was under Danish rule till the War when they got fed up.

How religious is Iceland by the way? I know the Faroes are disturbingly backwards. There was some pretty nasty anti-gay legislation passed recently.

He's obviously there showing fealty to Emperor Papaltine...

"Imperial Empire"? Is that like a Democratic Democracy?

BobbyEarle at #1 - well played!

It is nice that they wear those big white collars so that the executioner knows exactly where to take off their heads!

Who would have ever thought Darth Vader would play the plucky comic sidekick?

No, it's so that they look like their head is already on a plate.

A friend of mine and a member of the atheist/skeptic group Vantrú (disbelief) is playing the part of Vader. I stood by watching (or rather laughing hysterically). That was a fun day.

Glad to see you post this, PZ. I still can't help but chuckle when I watch it :)

I don't understand why they don't feel silly in those foofy collars and silly robes. The guy in the Vader costume is the most dignified of the bunch! Although I do rather fancy that cream-colored robe with the fancy embroidery....
