What's Bachmann said now?

The crazy lady of Minnesota politics has done it again.

In case you don't actually want to see and hear this lunatic, here's what she says:

I find it interesting that it was back in the 1970s that the swine flu broke out then under another Democrat president Jimmy Carter, and I'm not blaming this on President Obama, I just think it's an interesting coincidence.

She makes it really hard for us Minnesotans to act all snooty and superior around the Texans, you know.

I'm leaning toward the second option, since I don't know of any law that says that underpants-on-head insanity renders one unfit to serve in Congress.

She is quite possibly the only person in the entire universe who has thought of that coincidence.

Well, I think I'm the only person who has thought of the coincidence that Michele Bachman is the author of both the Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act and the Declaration of Independence. It's still a coincidence even if only one is true, isn't it?

I called all of Bachmann's offices and left messages asking what she meant by "interesting" coincidence and what her point was, pointing out that it Gerald Ford who was President at the time of the previous outbreak, and asking how the staff could work for such a stupid and vile person.

Rona considers herself a libertarian and fan of Ayn Rand. As Environment Minister she stated that although the population of Spotted Owls in British Columbia was 17, she did not feel they are threatened and therefore the owls did not need any special special protection.

So we could have a little cross border competition for dumbest. Rona wins, you get Canadian Bacon ( which we call back or peameal bacon), Michele wins, we need a volunteer from the Carolinas who says that is where the best bacon comes from.

I fucking hate it when people say "interesting coincidence." It's nothing but a weasely attempt to draw unsupported causal relationships between unrelated things and get away with it, with their hands out in the air, as if to say, "Hey, it's got nothing to do with me!" Fuck you.

One of my pet peeves is wrong-headed pet peeves. A lot of scientific discovery is based on someone noticing an interesting coincidence and investigating it to see if there's a causal connection. If one foolishly defines "coincidence" to be a priori devoid of causality, then one is blinding oneself to the sorts of unobvious causal relationships that can lead to such discovery.

I remember watching CSPAN while it was airing a House of Commons session with MPs adressing the PM, and one MP was giving a rousing speech detailing the various horrible offenses of the PM's government. As the MP went on, the level of his colleague's applause and shouts of appoval kept getting more raucous until the MP ended with a direct accusation that a national soccer defeat was indisputably the fault of the Prime Minister. The fever pitch paused a moment, and then it seemed that all the opposition supporters decided that they were already committed, and gave the loudest cheers of the session.
Sometimes democracy is just fucking hilarious.

Can't even get the year/president correct! One sad, but often unmentioned, thing about the gaffes of her and some others (Barton, Boehner, Inhofe, etc.) is what it says about how Republicans staff their office. They have so little respect for science they do not see a need to hire staff minimally competent to fact-check simple science facts used for rhetorical talking points in speeches. They cannot get competent help on so simple matters, is it any wonder they get the more complex science policy issues so very wrong.

We should not forget that the Republicans were responsible for murdering the Office of Technology Assessment that gave technical help to Congress on many things (e.g. the Genome Project). As has been said before, it is a problem for them that scientific facts have a well known liberal bias.

I spent a lifetime putting up with "California is filled with weirdos and crackpots" jokes. Minnesota and Texas are tied for first place in the weirdos and crackpots list.

I'm trying to wrap my head around how republicans think.
And i just don't get it.

First they try their hardest to fuck up their country and people in the 8 years they have.
And wave their flag and boast about their country and how good and rich and rightious they are, while in the mean time the rest of the world basically gives them the finger and doesn't even want them at the negociating table anymore.

Than they finally get a president who actually uses his head, tries to mend some of the incredible damage the republicans have done, both in world politics as in enviroment, science and a lot of other stuff.
And what do they do.. they try their best to make him look bad, pull him down.

It only leads to one conclusion for me.
They don't care about the usa, or the people that live there at all. They're egocentric maniacs who only want more money in their own pockets and fuck all to anybody who tries to prevent that.

I'm a really sweet and peacefull person.. but i sincerely think people like that should be shot.

I was one of the few people who actually got a swine flu shot in 1976 (history of respiratory problems.) I remember very well that Gerald Ford thought that jumping right on it and saving us all from the big, bad pandemic would get him re-elected. (Well, not technically re- of course.)

When the epidemic failed to materialize, it got him nothing but ridicule, and it certainly didn't help his prospects against Carter. In the last 1/3 century I have never heard this disease referred to as anything but the "Election-Year Flu." How short an attention span is it possible to have and still walk around?

Wow. She is quite the conspiracy nut. Read some of her quotes on her "Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act", and you start to see some recurring themes. It seems to me that stupid may not be the right word to describe her. Maybe "in dire need of professional help" would be a better description.

Then again, when you build your party around ideological purity (religion, political, or anything else for that matter), you get all kinds of nuts like that. It's funny that a term was coined to say negative things about people who compromise or change their mind on issues -- flip-flopper. Frankly, I'd always rather a flexible and somewhat pragmatic politician to a rigid and dogmatic one. I see this idiocy in my own country from time to time, too.

Ann Coulter isn't actually stupid; she says ridiculous things in order to get attention and sell more books. (She's quite candid about the fact that all her public appearances are aimed at increasing book sales.)

Bachmann, by contrast, appears to be a bona fide imbecile.

Oh, COME ON!

She needs to be removed from office ASAP, but she will still be able to ably support her family with a new career in the circus, or at least the sideshow. After all, how many people, even "Republican" politicians, can so gracefully put their head up their ass while daintily having both feet in their mouth?

I'd pay a dollar for that!

Alex Hammond inherited his position?

- nothing's sacred

Hmm, I'd guess you've only ever heard the Scottish first minister's name, nothing's: it's Alex Salmond. Winwood will be referring (inaccurately) to Gordon Brown. There's plenty to reproach Brown for, but he didn't "inherit his position" from Blair, who did his utmost to prevent Brown's succession. A lot of Tories and anti-Scottish bigots have been whingeing about there being no general election when Blair stood down and Brown succeeded him by a Labour Party decision, but this is the normal way to do things in a parliamentary system: you vote for a party, and the party chooses the Prime Minister. The same happened in 1990 when the Tories deposed Thatcher and installed John Major, and in 1976 when Wilson resigned and Labour chose Callaghan - no-one complained as far as I recall.

While that would be funny I think that's not correct as Ford was from Michigan not Minnesota and was the rep from the Grand Rapids, MI congressional district.

Unless I'm not remembering that correctly.

I find it interesting that it was back in the 1970s that the swine flu broke out then under Democrat [sic] President Jimmy Carter. And I’m not blaming this on President Obama, I just think it is an interesting coincidence.

As ThinkProgress notes, the 1970s swine flu outbreak happened on the watch of President Gerald Ford, a Republican, not Carter.

I find it interesting that the last office to which the vice-presidential-appointee Ford was actually elected was Member of Congress — the same job Bachmann holds today.

Has anyone pointed out the obvious, egregious error made by this INCREDIBLY STUPID woman?

1976 was an election year. GERALD FORD, a REPUBLICAN, was still in office until january 20th of the following year. So the last flu outbreak did not occur under a Democratic administration at all, but under a Republican one.

I remember this well, because 76 was the year I enlisted in the service, and they marched us all down to the infirmary to get swine flu shots. It made me sick for three days.

What's scary is this woman was elected to Congress, apparently with no understanding whatsoever how the presidential election process works.

However the most common irrational response is "It's all a distraction/media hype", without any apparent understanding of the issues, and with dismissive references to SARS and bird flu, and sometimes AIDS and climate change. A significant part of the British online commentariat seems to think Gordon Brown has somehow caused the event to dominate the news.

First off, I am sorry I am about to go off topic but this pisses me off so much. Why is it that some so called progressive people think it is quite alright to put down a person by calling that person a transsexual. Can you get away with saying Niggar Annie or Bulldyke Annie?

Is it because Shonny thinks that transsexuals are worthy of contempt? Or could it be that Shonny thinks that *nn C**lt*r's perceived transsexuality makes her worthy of contempt, much like straight children who are queer bashed because some people question their sexuality.

As it stand, many of the homophobic activists like to paint their proposed bills as if they are protecting girls and women from predatory men in dresses lurking about in woman's restrooms. They routinely get shafted by mainstream groups like HRC because the HRC thinks the general population will turn on gay right rights if TV/TS issues are addressed. And there is the on going battle between some women in the womyn's movement and MtF's over womyn's spaces and women born women.

Thank you Shonny and every other person who likes to insult *nn C**lt*r by accusing her of being a transsexual. Thank you for doing your part in insulting all people who's gender identity is not of the norm. Sometimes, it is hard to tell the good guys from the Rick Warrens of the world.

I think it's time for Michelle to prove she's not a human-gray hybrid. I think she is. We all know the grays are dumb as rocks. But they don't look human. She looks human and is dumb as a rock. So, you can see why it's obvious she's a hybrid.

Who's with me. She should prove she's not an alien.

Drill? Where are you, anyway?

Drill.

DC

Hrm. I'll let that be. :)

I'd give you an eyeroll, but I'd probably get hit.

Bachmann's comment is of course idiotic, but that won't change the way it will resonate with many Republican voters. I've already heard comments blaming the Democrats for not closing the border with Mexico to protect against the swine flu. Those who want a fence and armed guards along the U.S.-Mexico border are now adding "protect against the swine flu" to their old "protect our jobs" complaint.

Nah, just a pout, which would be more painful, I assure you.

Nah, just a pout, which would be more painful, I assure you.

Yeah. Don't do that. That would be devastating. Give me the hit instead.

Oh wait--I didn't actually give you the eyeroll.

No hit. No pout.
Win.

*eyeroll*

:P

Oh, okay. I see how it is. With a tongue and everything?

You are so gonna get it.

Bachmann is mesmerising, the way a writhing mass of maggots on rotting flesh is mesmerising. One wants to, tries to look away and yet...

On another piece of mouth-agape-in-utter-horror news, the Egyptian government really HAS ordered the slaughter of all pigs. This utter CRAP, from a public health point of view, but it actually seems to be aimed a harming the xtian minority, a VERY small, VERY poor population. The pigs are very nearly their only livelihood. Bad science and religious idiocy: what a team.

You are so gonna get it.

Promises, promises.

Keep it up.

If you kids can't get along back there, I'm going to have to turn this blog around, right now!

I don't know of any law that says that underpants-on-head insanity renders one unfit to serve in Congress.

No, but how 'bout advocating armed revolution, or referring (apparently without irony) to one's membership in Congress as "reporting from behind enemy lines"? This has been a funny thread, but Bachmann is no joke; she must go!

Knockgoats:

Let me join SC in welcoming you back. And let me thank you for the Gordon Brown explainer; I had been utterly baffled by that reference 'til you sorted it out.

but I find I rather want to watch. Is that so wrong?

Fuck. I should really have some quick witty reply that can fly right off my fingers, but I'm at a fucking loss for words.

Thanks, Bill.

*grumble*

Is that so wrong?

There is a commercial being played around here right now about long distance that features two pigs in a restaurant. At one point, one of them asks "Do you think that's wrong?" and of course I can't get that out of my head now that I've read the above.

Thanks for that, too.

Dear Ms Bachmann (I bet she hates Ms)
I find it an interesting coincidence that the Japanese allowed waterboarding, and they attacked the USA.

Actually I do find some co-incidences interesting- still know they are co-incidences though.

Didn't know about '76- I was 7 and in London! People laughed for the jab campaign, because the pandemic didn't happen (someone above said this)? Hmmm possibly the same people who complained about all the money spent on Y2K bug, because the computers didn't crash after all ("Well, it works like this...")

Before laughing at Ford please consider that a) clumsy doesn't mean stupid and b) Ford was left handed, so his natural inclination was to turn the opposite way to the people with him. My driving instructor told me that he hated teaching Doctors, as there seemed to be an inverse relationship between dexterity and intelligence (I've read this somewhere else about 15 years ago- no idea, I'm not claiming any truth)

Anyway- it's a punishment from God.

Josh:

The key fact about that commercial is that the pigs (who, BTW, show no signs of flu) are eating bacon (no guess as to whether they're also lesbians ;^) ).

There's a whole series of similar "what, you think that's wrong?" commercials, but I can't recall the details of any of the others.

Clearly a case of possession by demons. Therefore, god exists, and he has a sense of humor!

are eating bacon (no guess as to whether they're also lesbians ;^)

*looks around for Rev.*

The sad thing is that neither of them are drinking beer (although I think they have wine glasses). So I guess by the rules it might not even matter if they're lesbians.

There's a whole series of similar "what, you think that's wrong?" commercials, but I can't recall the details of any of the others.

No kidding? I must have missed those.

Hmm, I'd guess you've only ever heard the Scottish first minister's name, nothing's

It must just be an "interesting coincidence", then, that I got the last four letters of his name right.

:)

Here is a Rep who is just as deluded and mean spirited as Bachmann, Virginia Foxx

Rep. Foxx: "The bill was named after a very unfortunate incident that happened, where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of robbery. It wasn't because he was gay. The bill was named for him, the hate crimes bill was named for him, but it's, it's really a hoax, that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills."[House Floor Speech, 4/29/09]

Chimpy, what do you know about this person?

By Gruesome Janine (not verified) on 29 Apr 2009 #permalink

She is so pathetic. She has been unable to have even one reasonable and truthful statement. It almost defies the odds... it puts to question whether a broken clock really can be right twice a day!

I don't know much about her but I bet my mother does. I'll give her a call and find out. Mom is big involved in NC politics and usually has an answer to anything I ask from the NC political world.

Funny that's her home district (and where I was born) too. I bet she knows her really well. I should know her too. Shame on me.

I'm blushing like mad...

SC blushing. Yep. That's absolutely the best news I've heard all day.

Even better, he was a cocker spaniel. My first dog. I think we got him when i was 2 or 3.

Snowshoe Fifth Avenue? Not very good.

Actually, not so bad, but more like a drag queen. Kind of alto standing, as the Spanish would say. But yeah, it usually works better if you're from the suburbs.

Rev., you're not alone. Mine's pretty awful too.

"@Thomas Winwood #101: I've noticed that when Gordon Brown gets criticised (often correctly) that it is generally the same things that Tony Blair got a free pass on but with an added Scot/Scottish/Jock tag. I find that an interesting coincidence."

Er, you do realise that Blair is Scottish, born in Edinburgh don't you?

Yeah--I'm not going to say what I'm thinking here.

*bites lip*

And in other news, and I mention this herein because it strikes me as the sort of decision that Bachmann would make, Egypt has apparently decided that the way it wants to respond to the swine flu panic is to...

wait for it...

...

order the slaughter of ~300,000 pigs!

Can I get an allu akbar?

I always thought that was a jingle written expressly for the commercial... who knew?

Every time I'm at Sam's Club (yeah, yeah, I know...) I see this DVD set with hundreds of "classic" TV commercials. One of these days I'm going to give in and pick it up.

Thanks a lot SC. I heard the Enjoli jingle and the first thing that came to mind was Charlie.

That's a lot of bacon

Indeed. I'm trying to contemplate the logistics of distributing it--in Egypt. The results of that train of thought are not pretty for the pork. What a fucking waste of life for no fucking purpose. Lovely.

Every time I'm at Sam's Club (yeah, yeah, I know...)

Shudder. :P

To find that coincidence interesting, one has to be about as stupid as anyone can get and still be conscious. "Rudimentary sentience" would far too strong phrase. She hasn't got any at all.
