In the lecture hall yesterday, from left to right: A dewar of liquid nitrogen, a tube of racquetballs, a squeaky dog toy, a handful of yellow balloons, a vase of flowers, an inflated red balloon, an insulated glove, and a 4-liter jug of liquid nitrogen.
The dewars, the vase, the glove, and the dog toy survived the day.
More details, and video, tomorrow.

I visited SteelyKid's first-grade class yesterday with several liters of liquid nitrogen. Earlier in the fall, they did a science unit on states of matter-- solid, liquid, gas-- and talked about it in terms of molecules being more spread out, etc. Looking at her homeworks, I said "Oh, damn, if it…
True Lab stories are everywhere, as Arcance Gazebo today features a story of new and interesting liquid nitrogen experiments:
Condensed matter labs such as ours receive frequent deliveries of liquid nitrogen in one- or two-hundred liter dewars. Unfortunately, most of the Berkeley cond-mat labs are…
So, analysis of the movie Up is pretty popular in the blogosphere. Figure I might as well surf the popularity wave. So, I have a couple more questions.
The most important thing to estimate is the mass of the house. I am going to completely ignore the buoyancy of the house. I figure this will be…
Chad, where is the tube of KY-gelly?
These are physics props, not rugby props.
I recommend having also:
a) a high-TC superconductor and a magnet, so that you could show the Meissner effect (magnet levitating over the cooled superconductor)
b) a lead bell which changes tone after being cooled with LN
c) a red plastic ketchup bottle which changes color after being cooled with LN

What, no ice cream? People never forget a lecture that they get nummy food out of.
Speaking from experience, you can use LOX to make ice cream, but you have to eat it within an hour. Thankfully, this isn't a problem.
(Why LOX instead of LN2? How many dewars are we going to haul around with us? LOX has more uses, esp in the "fwoosh" and "bang" realm.)
