I Told You So

We've been having intermittent DSL problems here at Chateau Steelypips, which has led to much cursing of Verizon. The fact that their tech support department screwed up the first two service appointments, and repeatedly dropped calls after half an hour spent navigating their miserable phone tree and hold system didn't help any.

The repair guy finally showed up this morning, though, and found the source of the problem: Mice had built a nest in the terminal box on the pole, and squirrels had chewed on the wire going into the house.

And now, Her Majesty is being all smug. "You said I was barking at nothing," she says, "but I knew those squirrels were up to no good. You should give me stuff." Queen Emmy the Vigilant, that's her.

Back when we bought the house, Kate's parents were having miserable problems with their cable Internet service-- at peak times, the real bit rate went down so far that it was impossible to get anywhere-- so we opted for DSL service. Five years later, we still have DSL, and even the same modem. When…
SteelyKid's second-grade teacher sent home a couple of books about kids dealing with the loss of beloved pets-- one of which, The Tenth Good Thing About Barney is surprisingly atheistic. It's been over a month since I did a photo-a-day post, largely because I haven't been taking many pictures for a variety of reasons. I do still mean to get a year's worth of good photos done, but the "daily" part has completely disintegrated at this point. As a way of getting somewhat back on…
Our home Internet has been out since Friday, which is, as you might imagine, somewhat vexing. The most likely cause is that our DSL modem is dying (it's nine years old), which raises a technical problem. A few years ago, when we last had a problem requiring a service call, the tech who came out…

Great photo.

Damn squirrels! They chewed through the telephone line leading to my apartment, back when I was living in Madison, Wisconsin. This was before DSL, so it mainly showed up as mysterious dropouts in the modem connection and odd bursts of static during phone conversations.

The thing you have to ask yourself is: what were the squirrels planning to do, once they'd finished cutting your phone line?
