Guess the Movie Keywords: Mellencamp Edition

I'm sick and tired. Not metaphorically, literally. I had two labs today, and the cold I thought I had shaken back when classes started has come back with a vengeance, so I'm all congested and coughing. So here's something silly to pass the time, via Kate among others:

The following are "plot keywords" from IMDB for some movies I really like. Guess the movie based on the keywords.

  1. Small Town, Alcoholism, High School, Redemption
  2. Repressed Homosexual, Small Town, Missouri
  3. Small Town, Quitting Job, Famous Song, Real Time
  4. Eccentric, Widower, Small Town, Garfield Assassination
  5. Eating Contest, Child Uses Gun, Underage Smoking, Small Town
  6. Father Figure, Mental Institution, Small Town, Title Spoken By Character
  7. Anachronistic, Chanteuse, Small Town, Farting Scene
  8. Drug Dealer, Sex, Small Town, Femme Fatale
  9. Product Placement, Small Town, Statutory Rape, Film in Film
  10. Farmer, Gun Fight, Knife Fight, Small Town

Some more typical ones are below the fold:

  1. Fear of Flying, Sunglasses, Vulgarity, Smoking
  2. Irish American Politics, Loyalty, Double Cross, Hat
  3. Dancing, Drug Overdose, Biblical Passage, Shot in the Face
  4. Good vs. Evil, Ancient Greece, Microwave Oven
  5. Teacher Student Relationship, Ice, Popcorn
  6. Sword Fight, Flashback Sequence, Teacher Student Relationship, New York
  7. Catholic Church, Neo Nazi, Reckless Driving

More like this

First set:

5. _Stand By Me_

Second set:

3. _Pulp Fiction_

4. _Time Bandits_

. . . okay, I've got all the easy ones, now.

(And no, we didn't cheat.)

Second set 5 is surely "Highlander"

Er, 6.

Kate's are right, and Aaron is correct about #6 in the second set. #5 ought to be well known to the ScienceBlogs readership as well, but it's not Highlander.

#7 = Blazing Saddles, maybe

By Mike Molloy (not verified) on 17 Apr 2007 #permalink

Hmm. #7 in the second set could be Clockwork Orange.

Oh come on. I can't believe there are people who don't recognise The Blues Brothers in 2.7!

Real Genius would be my guess for 2.5 too. I have a suspicion 2.2 may be The Untouchables.

By Ross Smith (not verified) on 17 Apr 2007 #permalink

2.1 would be Midnight Run.

By Ken Hirsch (not verified) on 17 Apr 2007 #permalink

1.3 = High Noon?

2-1 ought to be the A-team, though, if TV shows were allowed

For some strange reason I downloaded the IMDB keyword data and spent half an hour processing the data to find all the matches.

There are two plausible matches for 1.8.
I'll just give the initials so as not to spoil the fun:
B V (1986)
or
L S, The (1994)

There were also two matches for 1.1, but only because Daymaker (2007) has a ridiculous count of 238 keywords and it's not even released yet!

Second set
6th is "Kill Bill"
7th is "American HIstory X"

Evan Goer: #2 = Miller's Crossing
#5 = Real Genius

Yes and yes.

Mike Molloy: #7 = Blazing Saddles, maybe

Yep.

Ross Smith: Oh come on. I can't believe there are people who don't recognise The Blues Brothers in 2.7!

I love "Reckless Driving" as a keyword for this...

Ken Hirsch: 2.1 would be Midnight Run.

Yep. A friend of mine once tried to watch the movie and light a new cigaretter every time DeNiro did-- he went through most of a pack that way...

HI 1.3 = High Noon?

Indeed.

Abhinav: 6th is "Kill Bill"

No. I deliberately picked those to leave that impression, but one of the keywords doesn't fit Kill Bill. It's considerably older, and not as critically acclaimed.

1.2 waiting for guffman?

By Brian Ledford (not verified) on 18 Apr 2007 #permalink

In the first set...first one is Hoosiers, fifth one is Stand By Me?

Brian Ledford: 1.2 waiting for guffman?

Yes.
As somebody who has been in small-town community theater productions, it's dead on.

Josh: In the first set...first one is Hoosiers, fifth one is Stand By Me?

Yes, and yes.
Kate already got #5, though.

No. I deliberately picked those to leave that impression, but one of the keywords doesn't fit Kill Bill. It's considerably older, and not as critically acclaimed.

For some of these there might be more than one correct answer. But for this one, there can be only one.

First set, number 9 seems like it could be Wayne's World, not sure about the statutory rape though. Unless Garth was a lot younger than he looked, and we maybe didn't get the full story of what went on in Wayne's basement...

Ken Hirsch: For some of these there might be more than one correct answer. But for this one, there can be only one.

Exactly.

Josh: First set, number 9 seems like it could be Wayne's World, not sure about the statutory rape though.

Do you consider Aurora, Illinois a small town? It seemed bigger than that in the movie...

Anyway, it's not Wayne's World. It's not a terribly well known movie, though it did get some critical buzz when it came out.

I'm surprised nobody's gotten #10...

1.8 is The Last Seduction

for 2.5 'Ice, Popcorn' would have been plenty. Hell, 'Laser, Popcorn' and you've pretty much got the pitch for the whole movie!

By Lou Wainwright (not verified) on 18 Apr 2007 #permalink

#10 = The Magnificent Seven.

By Tom Renbarger (not verified) on 18 Apr 2007 #permalink

#10 = The Magnificent Seven.

I keep forgetting to acknowledge that this is the correct answer. And that's all of them, I think.

Thanks for playing.

Only one obvious to me is #4 = Unforgiven. Though I may be wrong.
