Important TV Programming Note

Tonight at 8pm (Eastern) is the premier of the NOVA program "Absolute Zero". This is the first of two one-hour specials talking about the physics and technology of ultra-low temperatures. I haven't seen nearly enough hype for this on the Internet-- actual results aren't as sexy as wild speculation-- but the science here is fascinating, if I do say so myself, and at the very least, they have an impressive list of participants, and a nice Q & A about BEC with Luis Orozco of the University of Maryland (who was at Stony Brook when I was a grad student, but spent part of a sabbatical working in the same lab I did).

The second half of the NOVA special on "Absolute Zero" aired last night. Like the first installment, it was very well done, avoiding most of the traps of modern pop-science television. There were some mysterious shots of amusement park rides when they started talking about quantum mechanics, and I'…
Today I had to put off my normal morning run in order to make time to be interviewed on a radio show at 7:30 a.m. As I waited on hold for the interview to start, I could hear the hosts joking back-and-forth about what the "latest TV controversy" is. "Is it the Jay Leno / Conan O'Brien news on NBC…
Topping the looooong list of things I would give a full ResearchBlogging write-up if I had time is this new paper on a ultra-cold atom realization of "Dirac Monopoles". This is really cool stuff, but there are a lot of intricacies that I don't fully understand, so writing it up isn't a simple…
The second part of the NOVA program Absolute Zero airs tonight on PBS stations. The first part, "The Conquest of Cold" covered the theory and technology of refrigeration, while this segment, "The Quest for Absolute Zero" will include all the fun atomic physics stuff leading up to the achievement of…

I'm not sure if this works or not... but if it does, here's a link to the episode on the Tivo scheduler. Good luck to see if that works.

When scrolling through the listings, I almost clicked "Absolute Jewelry" on HSN. So, don't do that.

Saw it on the BBC a while back. It's quite good.

Luis is good at this kind of stuff! As well as a gourmet chef!

I read the book on which it is based, and saw an early clip -- it should be great, and you're right, it hasn't received nearly enough attention... Thanks for the heads-up!

Thanks for the heads up! My TV guide just says Nova so I wasn't sure if I would watch. Now I am. Sounds fascinating!
Dave Briggs :~)

Well, Chad, I talked about it in detail here yesterday, and so you could have discussed it there if you were inclined to help have a discussion about "actual results". But perhaps you missed it.

Moving on to substance, I must say that the online materials for the show are rather good... Since my post yesterday, I've been informed by some of the people working on it that some of the fun simulations that were not in place there yesterday are now up and running.

Enjoy!

I did miss it. Mea culpa.
It's been a crazy couple of days.

I thought it was pretty sexy. Can't wait for next week's conclusion. Thanks for the head's up on this program.
