Two-Word Lyrics Quiz, #3

As you can guess from the title, I've done this twice before when I had stuff to do that precluded quality blogging. Kate's in Rochester for a court appearance, leaving me home with SteelyKid, so this seems like a perfect occasion for a third go-round.

The pairs of words in the following list are consecutive words from pop songs that I think might be identifiable given just those two words. The songs range from kind of obvious to impossibly obscure. If you think you know the answer, post a comment completing the line, and then suggest your own two-word phrase from a different song for other people to try to guess.

First of all, here are five from the second quiz that never got guessed. I've added two additional words from the same song (not consecutive with the first pair) as an aid to guessing:

  • A) "wearing tulle" and "beauty's just"
  • B) "spare bulb" and "hydro field"
  • C) "platinum chain" and "transactional analysis"
  • D) "Fidel Castro" and "Blackie and"
  • E) "ain't amoebas" and "no porcupine"

And now, a whole new set:

  1. patchouli oil
  2. rock-n-roll clown
  3. Easter Mass
  4. counting loonies
  5. loonies off
  6. chemical sky
  7. asbestos sky
  8. silver spaceships
  9. deconstruct me
  10. rap metal
  11. Jesus rides
  12. glowing bronze
  13. Italian mobster
  14. underwire bra
  15. late-night promises
  16. seventeen eyes
  17. bosom for
  18. Einstein disguised
  19. soap impression
  20. free milk
  21. fifty-pound notes

Once again, to guess a song, complete the line containing those words, and suggest two more from a different song. Hopefully, this can provide some continuing amusement while I'm scrambling around at work.

More like this

I've got meetings and phone calls most of the day, so here's something to keep you amused. Each of the following two-word phrases is taken from a pop song, some well-known, some faintly obscure. If you think you can identify one, leave a comment containing a more complete version of the line in…
(I think that's the right number...) I've got a ton of stuff to do today, and it's the last Friday of summer, so here's a little light entertainment. As in previous editions, each of the two-word phrases on the list below should hopefully uniquely identify one pop song. If you think you recognize…
I should queue up some more PNAS posts, but I think I'm going to save a bunch of them for when we're at Worldcon. And I do have more serious science-related stuff that I've marked to talk about, but it's Friday, and everybody could use a break. So here's a silly pop-music thing instead. As with…
I have a new appreciation for Cathy and Amanda and the rest of the infant room staff at the day care center, after two days of chasing a fully recovered SteelyKid around the house because she still had a couple of coxsackie virus blisters on her hands. They're earning the money we're paying them.…

14 is obviously John Cage's 4'33".

Dammit. The unclosed tag was rendering an a way that didn't let me see it.

Since just fixing it would screw up the numbering of some things that have already been guessed, I added a new pair for #14.

[C] is I believe Zevon's 'Gorilla, you're a desperado'? And [B] is Bare Naked Ladies' 'Light up my room.'

New:

unprecedented solar

and

purgatory doing needlepoint (yes, I know, 3 words. A whole new paradigm. But this one is a lot tougher.)

Old one with "ain't amoebas" is Bonnie Raitt "A Thing Called Love" (is that a John Hiatt song?)

19. "Happiness is a Warm Gun" - The Beatles

15. "What it takes" - Aerosmith

Ewan's "unprecedented solar" comes from "Flash Gordon" by Queen.

New: every planet

"counting loonies" -> "One Great City", Weakerthans. Geez I love that album.

New:
deadweight long

B) "Light Up My Room", Barenaked Ladies.

12--Driving with the brakes on. Del Amitri

Dammit. Sorry, did not read the rules.

She sucks on a matchlight, glowing bronze--steering on

new: superman trumpet

I know that such a non-specific comment sounds like comment spam, and you might think I'm just missing a link. But really it just means that I appreciated reading that, and since noone else is commenting, I wanted to let you know that you've got people reading!

2. Nothing's to dumb to this rock-n-roll clown - Def Leppard, "Photograph"

"your dog"

In the spirit of actually following the rules, my response at #11 should have included:

4. Counting loonies trying not to say, 'I hate Winnepeg'

Pineyman: "Now I wanna be your dog" -- the Stooges? Seems like that could be from a lot of songs.

13. Italian mobster

Magnificient seven by "The only band that matters" aka The Clash

Christ, I've been reading this blog forever and it takes a pop quiz to squeeze a comment from me :D

Oh, I didn't read the rules, here's the new one.
13. Italian mobster shoots a lobster

new: breeding ignorance

10. rap metal - "1985" Bowling for Soup

New: Drip feed

By Rogue Epidemiologist (not verified) on 12 May 2009 #permalink

18. Dylan, Desolation Row ("Einstein disguised as Robin Hood / With his memories in a trunk")

New words: "Instant justice".

10. Listening to rap metal, turntables in her eyes - The Girl All the Bad Guys Want, Bowling for Soup. Love that song.

A new pair: dances go-go

How did no one guess

"With the girl at the top wearing tulle and a Miss Somewhere sash, waving like the queen. Well beauty's just another word I'm never certain how to spell, go tell the nurse to turn the TV back on. . . " from Reconstruction Site. (The Weakerthans)

By the way, no idea who you are, but your website is one of the first things to pop up in a google search for "counting loonies." :-)
