Happy Birthday, Grums

Today is my grandmother's 90th birthday: born on this date in 1925 in the Bronx, the seventh of eight kids. She moved out to Long Island circa WWII, and has lived there ever since. Many of my favorite childhood memories involve visiting her in Mineola. Back in the 70's, she used to host me and two of my cousins (one a couple years older than me, the other a year or two younger) for a week or so in the summer, to give our parents a break; as a parent of two kids about the age we were at that time, I find this kind of incredible now...

Anyway, she's still going strong at 90, and recently returned from a Caribbean cruise with my parents, my aunt and uncle, and three of her siblings (one of whom will hit 100 this September). We don't see her as often as we might like, but the kids love her, as you can see from the "featured image" above (also reproduced below for the RSS crowd...)

I mention this not only because she's awesome and we love her, but because I'll be spending the day driving down to my parents' to say "happy birthday" in person, then home for the kids' bedtime. So if there's anything you want from me, it'll have to wait until tomorrow...

We're headed out for a last road trip before the start of classes, taking SteelyKid to visit her great-grandmother and great-great-aunts. Why? Because she's this cute:
I'm always taking pictures of SteelyKid going about her business, so a little turnabout is fair play:
Ken Cope, a regular commenter here (come on, you guys all know him) sent along some cephalopodian artwork a friend of his does.
SteelyKid says "Daddy, I can help with your puppet show. Look at this awesome dragon puppet Grandma got me!"

Happy Birthday! She looks way younger!

My maternal grandma died some weeks before my wedding, a month shy of 95. My paternal grandma died a year or so after the twins were born, they got to meet her once but they can't recall. It's great your kids have their great-grandma around :) You clearly have some longevity genes in the family!

Happy Birthday to an obviously wonderful lady!

My husband's grandfather just turned 90 last Saturday. Hopefully, he'll make it at least a few more years so our little one will remember him. (Just 4 months old now.)
