Marry me

Oh, that hospital.

Yesterday was SO romantic. The hospital woke me up early with a big, sloppy kiss and had me all packed off to work by 6:00 a.m. An hour later, it gave me a code--a guy with a busted heart chamber. Get it? A heart chamber? On Valentine's Day? So thematically appropriate! I did chest compressions for days after he was dead because the cardiologists wanted to practice doing pericardial windows. It's a good thing the hospital prefers its ladies musky.

I discharged two patients to nursing homes before noon (nuts to those sad, old single people, ha ha!), and after my upper level resident left for clinic, the hospital gave me two admissions. Two! One of which had a history of congestive heart failure, heart valve disease, and bypass grafts of three heart vessels.

I KNOW! That hospital is one thoughtful sonofabitch.

We were together all afternoon and on into the evening, me and the hospital. We had a hasty dinner of graham crackers and diet ginger ale, then spooned for a while in the surgical ICU, where the hospital gave me some of that shitty heart-shaped candy with the peanutless peanut butter in the middle. It was totally freaking romantic.

At about 10:30 p.m., right when I didn't think it could get any better, the hospital walked me out to my car. And then--are you sitting down? Because I didn't, all goddamn day--the hospital asked me the question I've been waiting for all my adult life: "Dr. Signout, will you marry me?"

Naturally, I burst into tears. Just imagine, me and the hospital, together forever!

I said I'd sleep on it.

SteelyKid was sent home on Wednesday with strep throat, and so needed to be home thursday as well. she was very disappointed to be missing school, as her class was preparing for a Valentine's Day party on Friday. I picked up a bunch of work for her, including a heart-shaped paper pouch to hold the…
A few days ago, I posted here about a recent ICU admission of a patient with pancreatic cancer. Her admitting diagnosis was septic shock, and I'd initially included some detail about septic shock to help illustrate a clinical dilemma in her treatment. Although that portion was ultimately edited out…
Yes, more snakes: after yesterday's horned snake article (thanks to everyone who chipped in with ideas and comments) I've decided to stick with snakes for a while. I can knock these articles up in a few minutes, and unfortunately I just don't have time at the moment to finish the backlog of…
"How many times you poke me?" she asked. Then, in her heavily accented English, "Dr. Better never took this long for LP. Five minutes, always." I made empathetic noises, apologized a few times, and tried to focus on the needle I was moving in and out of her back. I'd done four lumbar punctures…

I got to sleep with the hospital last night. And lucky for me, he doesn't believe in one night stands... oh, no, he's mine every fourth night! I'm one lucky girl to be in such a stable long-term relationship.

Pericardial windows? How quaint...

After giving the proposal some careful thought I realized a point of vital importance: the rule of thumb for the engagement ring diamond is two months salary.

I can't wait to see the size of the rock on your finger!

I am already married to USMLE. I hope he will grow up to RESIDENCY.
