I T.A.ed for Konrad Bloch. Given that he was driven out of Germany by the Nazis and embraced by America, I don't think he would have described himself as anything other than an American biochemist.

He was also one of the nicest and most charming men I've ever had the good fortune to meet. Years later, long after my entirely forgettable teaching assistantship, he would still greet me by name when we encountered each other walking across campus.
