Hogzilla II

In this photo released by Melynne Stone, Jamison Stone, 11, poses with a wild pig he killed near Delta, Ala., May 3, 2007. Stone's father says the hog weighed a staggering 1,051 pounds and measured 9-feet-4 from the tip of its snout to the base of its tail. If claims of the animal's size are true, it would be larger than ``Hogzilla,'' the huge hog killed in Georgia in 2004. (AP Photo/Melynne Stone)

Apparently, we're supposed to believe that the eleven year old "shot the huge animal eight times with a .50-caliber revolver and chased it for three hours through hilly woods before finishing it off with a point-blank shot" (source). And the hog didn't turn on him?

Not sure about this one.

I just couldn't resist covering this, sorry (though, technically speaking, it's old hat). On June 17th 2004, the reign of Hogzilla - an immense pig estimated to be nearly half a ton in weight and 3.7 m in length - was brought to an end. The animal 'rampaged' across southern Georgia until it was…
As Shelley has pointed out, Stinky Journalism has done a take-down on the Hogzilla II photos (see here and here) and has concluded that the hog was not as large as claimed. Not all of that debunking is, it appear, correct, so you might also want to see this debunking which claims that the photos…
Knowing that members of a certain species sometimes reach a certain size is not always the same as actually seeing images of that certain species at that certain size. The Puma, Cougar or Mountain lion Puma concolor (other names include panther, painter, catamount, mountain devil, silver lion,…

Is it just me ... does the kid not appear to be crouching a good 10-15 (maybe 20) feet in the background while this so-called Hogzilla is maybe 2 feet from the camera? I vote that this is hogwash. :)

You are correct, Mel. It's a common photographic trick used by hunters to make their trophies look bigger. Works with fish, too (just extend your arm toward the camera and the fish seems to double in size).

*big sigh* Well, I was really hoping that I'd be able continue surfing the internet, successfully avoiding that photo by not clicking on the numerous articles about it... I don't care whether the kid killed the hog by himself or not, because all I see in that photo is a beautiful animal that was extremely fortunate to live as long as it did, but very unfortunate to be shot to death like that. It just saddens me emensly to read about stories like this. They had a damn camera, why couldn't they simply have taken a picture of it while it was alive and called it a day? Hell, I know the answer, but that doesn't mean I'll understand it... I never will. That kind of mentality disgusts me.

WELL AS FAR AS THE PICTURE GOES ITS FAKE USING THE TRICK ABOVE THE LARGEST RECORDED WILD HOG KILLED WAS AROUND 400LBS BUT AS FAR AS HUNTING GOES I MYSELF HAVE KILLED 4 WILD HOGS IT IS VERY DANGEROUS IF INDEED THE BOER IS AS BIG AS THEY ARE CLAIMING IT WOULD HAVE TURNED ON THE BOY WITH THE FIRST SHOT AND MORE THAN LIKLEY HAVE KILLED HIM
