Tomorrow I'll be taking part in a debate about the place of alternative medicine in the NHS on BBC Radio Oxford. If you're in the area you can tune in on 95.2 FM, otherwise listen live via the BBC website. It's part of a phone-in show, so I expect a lot of calls from the "it works for me" brigade, but you can have your two cents by calling 08459 311111.

tags: BBC America, natural history, nature programming, television, entertainment, education, streaming video I just wanted to let you all know that every one of you with a television is the subject of my enduring envy because I just learned from Nicole Wetzold that my favorite radio news and television programming source has done it again: BBC is now bringing all of its natural history content together under one brand, BBC Earth. This programming is available in the United States on BBC America. As a taste of what to expect, here is a video they sent me to share with you. It is a tiny bit of…

Following up on my previous post about visual illusions, reader Jake alerted me to this story from the BBC: A design student made a battered old Skoda "disappear" by painting it to merge with the surrounding car park. Sara Watson, who is studying drawing at the University of Central Lancashire (Uclan), took three weeks to transform the car's appearance. Note that like a trompe l'oeil painting in a building, or an anamorphic projection, the perspective work on the car will only allow it to "blend in" seamlessly when seen from a specific vantage point - which might be why we only have one…
Tune in to Richard Bacon's talk radio show on BBC 5 Live tonight, where I'll be fighting the skeptic's corner for the evening's debate: Should we all be looking for our inner self?: Some therapists claim the key to a fulfilling life is finding your 'inner self'.But is it all just nonsense? Is our inner self a powerful healer that can give us peace and confidence in life?Or is it just a load of hocus pocus? We'd love to hear from you: call 0500 909 693, text 85058 or email bacon@bbc.co.uk I suspect I'll be up against someone from the bizarre InnerSelf website, which seems to be a mix of bland…

Last week I wrote about how the BBC's Drive Time show on Radio 2 allowed a quack therapist to promote herself on air, making bizarre statements about the human body. This included the 'scientifically proven' existence of meridians which "carry the energy of our thoughts". Needless to say, myself and others took umbrage to this miseducation, so I submitted the following to the BBC complaints panel: As a science writer, I was disappointed to find out that your R2 Drive Time show on Wednesday gave a considerable amount of airtime to life coach Janet Thompson, allowing her to voice numerous…
