Event

The other week, while many Israelis stayed home to clean their kitchens before the upcoming Passover holiday and thousands of preteens were screaming themselves hoarse over Justin Bieber in a Tel-Aviv park, another sort of cultural event was taking place nearby. Following the success of the beer and science event in Rehovot, we took Weizmann scientists and students to the bars and cafes of Tel Aviv. No one was quite sure if it would work. Rehovot, after all, is the city of science, while Tel Aviv is the city of culture - of music, art and theater. But, it's also the city of nightlife, and it…
Next week I'll be in London to attend Bad Idea magazine's Future Human, part of a series of salons exploring themese of transhumanism. Wednesday's event looks at whether increasingly sophisticated software will render some clerical occupations obsolete. In the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, it was the British working class who fell victim to the mechanisation of industry. In the Information Revolution of the 21st century, however, industrial productivity is increasingly driven by software algorithms and the exponential rise of computer processing power.Middle-class…
The time has come to wrap-up this blog series, but there was one other topic I wanted to cover before concluding; how do you let people know about the mass of ink-blotted, dead tree pulp that is your book? Promoting Written in Stone will be a tough job. When it hits shelves this fall it will undoubtedly be in competition with numerous other science titles for the chance of being reviewed in the few publications which still review science books at all. Book tours, too, have become nearly extinct, and as a virtually unknown science writer I don't expect many (any?) people to show up at their…
Usually, I'm kind of a hermit, but I heard there would be Bacon and so, I'm going to leave the house next Weds, night and attend a science blogging event at the University of Washington. I think it will be fun. Not only will there be Bacon, there will be pizza and other bloggers, who may or may not be entertaining. Others who will be there (besides me) are: Dave Bacon, Quantom Pontiff Maria Brumm, Green Gabbro, who is NOT really an intern with the Discovery Institute Keith Seinfeld, KPLU, Science and Wonderhttp://kplu.wordpress.com/ Alan Boyle, MSNBC, Cosmic Log Eric Steig, UW Earth…
Just a quick note to let all you fellow Brooklynites know about a "singles mixer" (those are ironic quotes) being put on by the brilliant minds behind Radio Lab "the science show for people who think they don't like science." The formula behind the festivities? "Chemistry + Biology + Radio = Love...or something like it." Sounds good, no? The evening will be emceed by Radio Lab host Jad Abumrad who promises to: [combine] the latest lab results from the leading edge of neurological research with breathtaking tales of surprising romance . . . And to help your biological drives out a little [by…
