godlessness

How sad. There are atheists everywhere else, but here in the United States, Robert Putnam says there are almost no atheists. It used to be, in the 1950s, that most Americans were kind of in a moderate, not very intense religious middle. And we have moved toward the extremes of being either very religious — this is the sort of evangelical Protestant part of the religious spectrum — or very non-religious. This is the more secular, not really atheist. Almost no Americans say that they're atheist, but they're certainly not churched. That's especially true for younger people. Oh, dear. There is…
They're hanging out in Skepties Suid-Afrika and ScepticSA. They've also got sangomas and witch-hunters, so they're probably busy.
They've got Associação Brasileira de Ateus e Agnósticos. They've got Bule Voador. They've got individual blogs. Yeah, they've got atheists.
Yeah, I know, totally unsurprising for such a heathenish country, but we still have to give props to the good work of the New Zealand Association of Rationalists & Humanists.
With their recent history, I'm surprised that there aren't more Somalis who have given up on gods.
Africa is a bit under-represented in my email in-box, so it's good to see Botswana Skeptic there.
Holy crap! Really? I'm not surprised that the person behind Land of Sands is anonymous.
They must be popular, too — a lot of people have sent me a link to Ateos Charruas.
Check out El Movimiento Ateísta de Puerto Rico. It's a small island with mighty minds.
Hooray! The land of Karl Ernst von Baer is full of skeptics and atheists! By the way, I'm getting flooded with email from all around the world with people requesting acknowledgment of their godless community. I'm trying to spread them out — if I put up a solid wall of "X has atheists!" posts, the effect will be diluted and people won't actually visit your site — and I'm also getting an awful lot of them that are getting lost in the deluge. If you sent me a notice, give it a few days, and if it still doesn't appear, send me another email…I'll get to it eventually.
At least I think so…I can't read a word of their website. Hey, nobody is going to send me a link to a foreign porn or phishing site and tell me that these are the local atheists, are they? Oh, wait, it has the word "sekularizam" in there. I think I'm safe, this time.
Someone has to tell me what "Dievu nei tikek, nei pasitikek" means.
Yes they do. And they're all tigers.
And boy do they…I got sent lists of forums, groups, and multiple godless secular humanism organizations.
Wait, Finland? Aren't they all atheists there? It might be news if Finland has Baptists. Oh, well, they're just dripping with godless groups, including the Atheist Association of Finland, Skepsis, and the Organization of Free Thinkers. Probably every kindergarden class represents an atheist group, for that matter.
This is good, because I've always wanted to visit Tunisia…maybe I'd be welcome among the Tunisiens Irreligieux.
We're off to a late start, but the first meeting of the UMM Freethinkers will be held tomorrow, 25 October, at 7:00pm in the Moccasin Flower Room of the student union. I should add that if you aren't a student, but are an interested member of the Morris community who would like to get together with fellow infidels on a regular basis, you're invited, too. I'm not sure what exactly the meeting will be about, since it's entirely student run, but I'll be saying a few words at the event. Come on by and help us plan our imminent takeover of the universe!
Sophisticated is not a synonym for true. Probably the most common dodge used by defenders of religion against atheist critics is the magic word "sophisticated," as in, "You only attack the crudest forms of religion, but avoid the more challenging, sophisticated forms of faith." It's an invalid defense in two ways: one, those crude forms of religion are the most common and the ones promoted by the rascals in power, so it's perfectly reasonable to address the most dangerous kinds of religion, especially since the theologians so rarely do so (although they seem to have plenty of time to attack…
Oh yes there are, although I can't read a word of the Bangladesh atheist website. I can still raise a fist in solidarity, though!
And they're bilingual, with one blog at Szekuláris Figyeló, and another in English at Hungarian Secular News. Comrades!
