As most of AFTIC readers will know by now, the Berkley Earth Surface Temprature project has pre-released its set of four studies that are still pending peer-review and publication. Bombshell news: the earth has warmed pretty much exactly as all the other analyses have indicated. UHI and micrositing issues do not explain away the measurements. I don't have much to add to the dialogue, but here is a good place for locals to discuss and share links. Watch the cllimate evolve here: Update: here are a few relevant links: Primary sources are here The Economist gets there first Muller has an op…
I've been buried in classes and meetings today, and I look up and discover Ghadafi has been killed, and people here are already talking about it. I guess I should put up a thread so you can stuff all the words into one common place. (Also on FtB)

I'm typing this on a Mac laptop. I heard about it while browsing the news on my iPad. I have an iPhone in my pocket. There's an iPod in my bedroom that we use for alarm and music. I bought my first Mac in 1984; I wrote my Ph.D. thesis on an Apple II. Maybe you use a Windows machine, but face it: Microsoft has been chasing Apple's interface design since the 1980s. And now Steve Jobs has died. We owe a lot to him. He's the guy who shaped our virtual world. (Also on FtB)

The comments over at More Misc are trailing off, but I am (as ever) astonished by peoples' desire to have the last word. Let it never be said that KK is uncontroversial. Still, what more could he ask? So, time for something else. I didn't comment on Al Gore's latest (did I?) or even watch it, but David Hone has what look like some perceptive comments. I'm beginning to get google circle spam in unmanagable amounts: too many X's are adding me to their circles, and I can no long bother check them all out, let alone reciprocate. Still, I did find Climate Deniers Campaign Against the BBC…
Well, it is that time of year again, the sea ice in the Arctic has reached its minimum extent. (please note that the image above shows the August data, September's graphic is not yet available though it will look very similar) So how's that "recovery" coming along? According to NSIDC, this year's September minimum is the second lowest in the satellite record. Peter, over at Climate Crock of the Week, presents his latest video on that topic, a very sober and sobering placement of this year in its long term context: Once again, the choice is between the "climate skeptics" and your lying…

My father's a huge fan of the Weather Channel, something I've never really gotten into. I did watch a bunch of its hurricane coverage on Sunday, though, trying to figure out how my travel was going to be affected. Thus, I got to see a really fabulous exchange as the studio anchor tossed to a field reporter on a boardwalk in New York City after learning that the storm had been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm. Paraphrasing from memory: ANCHOR: [Reporter], we've just learned that Irene has been downgraded to a tropical storm. Has that changed anything where you are? REPORTER: […

Wait, I don't think this was intended as a joke. Esquire introduces an article on oral sex with Dominique Strauss-Kahn's maid. We don't mean to be indelicate, but well, this whole thing has gotten a little indelicate, hasn't it? In the latest Newsweek, the maid who was allegedly raped by former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn gives a very graphic account of their time together, including some very indecent oral sex. And whomever you believe, that's a tragedy. Because as we've learned over the years from our sex expert, a blowjob need not be degrading or hurtful, for either party. Here, a…
