Image: GrrlScientist, 18 May 2009 [larger view]. There are several hundred recognized Oncidium species, but the experts reclassify plants in this group often, so I am not sure which species this is. Additionally, Oncidium species have been freely hybridized in captivity.

Image: GrrlScientist, 16 May 2009 [larger view]. I have always been fascinated with these flowers because, as the individual blossoms age, their color changes. So each plant can have flowers with many different colors, even on the same stem!

Image: GrrlScientist, 12 May 2009 [larger view]. I posted this picture of Manhattan, which I snapped yesterday, to let you know that I am thinking of you, but I am working hard on a writing project right now. My deadline is Friday, and I am hopeful that I will deliver a good product. As you know, Friday evening, I will be visiting AMNH's sneak preview of their new mammals exhibit, so I won't be doing much…

tags: homelessness, unemployment, poverty, NYC Life, social policy A homeless woman eats dinner (it looks like "Sheba" brand cat food, doesn't it?) Image: orphaned. I awoke this morning at 5am, as usual, and one of the first things I heard on the morning news was Mayor Bloomberg, one of the richest men in the world, saying that the city is charging rent for the homeless to stay in a shelter. Blinking in the darkness, I thought I was listening to the Onion news report instead of NPR. When I lived in beautiful Seattle, there were lilac bushes in my yard, and mostly everywhere else, too. So every day, I would cut fresh lilac flowers for my little house (which I shared with 46 lories) and the entire place smelled glorious. It is the smell of lilacs that mean spring to me.

tags: NYC, Upper West Side, Manhattan, flowers, nature, image of the day Manhattan Roses. Photographed on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Image: GrrlScientist, 4 May 2009 [larger view]. These roses are deep red on the inside and cream-colored on the outside. I find the color combination interesting, even though I am not sure if I like these roses.
