Mozart had a pet starling whom he thought of as his musical companion. When his bird died, he had a funeral for him and invited his friends. This video should give you an appreciation for how talented these birds are as mimics [3:15]

A friend of mine in California who handfeeds European starling chicks and then sells them as pets, refers to them as "the poor man's mynah bird." This video should give you an appreciation for how talented these birds are as mimics [3:27]

Okay, if you are like me, you were not able to see the Nature program, Parrots in the Land of Oz, which aired on PBS on 19, 20 and 21 October. So I have dug up a few videos that give you a glimpse of what you did not see. This is a second video includes lots of footage of huge squadrons of flying budgerigars, and several species of stunningly colored rosellas and lories (which I've bred in captivity) [9:24]

So I have dug up a few videos that give you a glimpse of what you did not see. This video includes a close look at fig parrots and eclectus parrots (both of which were included in my research), along with several species of cockatoos -- black white and pink species [9:40]

Did you know that budgerigars, Melopsittacus undulatus -- erroneously known as "parakeets" in the United States -- can see UV light? Did you know that female budgerigars rely on the UV reflectance to judge the quality of potential mates? This is a fascinating little trailer about wild budgerigars from the Nature program Parrots in the Land of Oz, which airs on PBS on 19, 20 and 21 October [1:43]

Did you know that several species of cockatoos are black instead of white in color? Did you know that the Black Palm Cockatoos, Probosciger aterrimus, use tools -- tree limbs that they use to beat on their chosen nest cavity -- to attract a mate? Below the fold is a clip of the courtship of a pair of Black Palm Cockatoos from the Nature program Parrots in the Land of Oz, which airs on PBS on 19, 20 and 21 October [1:56]
The filmographer, Paul Frederick, writes; It's full fall color here in the North Eastern US. This year has been one of the best for fall foliage. My mentor who taught me so much about TV production back in the early 90's passed away recently. I hadn't seen him in a few years but still think of his lessons nearly everyday. Many of these locations we shot together nearly 20 years ago. I will always remember him and I offer this video up as my way of saying thanks to an old friend. [3:16]

Hayden Panettiere Public Service Announcement: Three requests for Americans: smoke cigarettes, vote for John McCain, and don't wear seatbelts (and this includes an offensive (but appropriate) word, so don't play it when your boss might overhear) [0:47]

Here's a nice video of two courting blue cranes, Anthropoides paradisea. The beautiful Blue Crane is the national bird of South Africa. It experienced a sudden population decline beginning around 1980 and is now classified as vulnerable. The footage in this video was shot by Christian Letruria in South Africa (2008) and the music by the Icelandic band, Sigur rós.

I know this is meant in jest, but I find it to be somewhat frightening since this very scenario (somewhat modified) already happened eight years ago! In short, Homer Simpson tries to vote for Obama and gets a nasty surprise.
Okay, I was slightly distracted by my Seattle visit and lost track of the Parody Wars, which are being fought with an evil scientist who resides in Finland. This scientist sent an attack across the ocean this past week, thinking that he can scare me into submission with videos of William Shatner singing a variety of songs (yes, this is scary, I'll admit), or Britney Spears singing "Satisfaction" (even worse that Shatner), or a variety of other assaults included in his fuselade. However, I claim the ultimate victory with this truly terrifying video that tops everything he could possibly think…
A streaming review of Bill Maher's new film, Religulous, that is being released TODAY. I totally must see this film, and I must get the DVD, too! [4:23]
Comedian Bill Maher takes on religion in his new film, "Religulous." He tells Harry Smith that religion can be laughed at, and for good reason. This is a film for everyone who is afraid that the Sarah Palins of the World will take over. This film is scheduled for release TODAY (3 October 2008) [4:03]
Bill Maher discusses his film, Religulous, with Larry King. Part of this movie was filmed on location in Heaven. This film is scheduled for release on 3 October 2008 [7:58]

Apparently, during an interview with Katie Couric, Sarah Palin made a mockery of herself as a vice presidential candidate, as a governor of the state of Alaska, and as a woman. I have a video (below the fold) of part of this interview with Katie, along with the transcripts of part of that interview where Sarah describes her foreign policy experience.
