Sez new Secretary of Defense Bobby Gates: "I would confess I’m no expert on Iraq." Which would be OK, except that "Later, asked about reaching the right balance between American and Iraqi forces, he told the panel he was 'no expert on military matters.'"

This will go brilliantly, I'm sure.

Much has been written about the incompetence with which the Bush administration has pursued the war and post-war occupation in Iraq. I'd like to add to our understanding of that situation by looking, in hindsight, at what was predicted with foresight before the war. Many of the people who were…
Yesterday, the Bush administration awoke from its long slumber and noticed that chaos overran Iraq plan in ’06, Bush team says. The Times story barely requires commentary: President Bush began 2006 assuring the country that he had a "strategy for victory in Iraq." He ended the year closeted with…
Presidential hopeful John Edwards just released his plan for ending the Iraq war, making him the second of the major Democratic candidates to announce a proposed solution to our involvement in the conflict (Barack Obama sponsored a bill, S.433, last month that is in the Senate.) Looking at the two…
Brig. He adds one new element to the story: Rumsfeld actually threatened to fire…

Anyone expect anything different? This administration places no value whatsoever on knowing how to do a job. Loyalty trumps competence every single time. Just look at the guys who worked with Bremer in Baghdad: not one had any experience in whatever he was in charge of. Look at Brownie. Why not Gates, too? He's there to help W ignore the Report.

If he were an expert, I'm sure the Administration would have to find a political hack to review his comments.
