How hot is it?

... so hot that the cable on my laptop's AC adapter MELTED. (If any of you is expecting an email from me - this would explain the delay.)

Last night I was typing a summary of the recent rasiRNA/piRNA papers (while playing scorched3D) when my computer switches to battery mode. At that point my wife asks me "do you smell burning plastic?"

(Maybe I can blame that on scorched - a ridiculous game that my brother and I used to play about 15 years ago - little tanks lobing missiles at each other while uttering insults and bizarre quotes - "I love the smell of napalm in the morning". I guess some people missed the game so much that they resurrected it and it is now available free.)

Back in April, I installed Ubuntu Linux on my oldish Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, bought in early 2005. Ubuntu's rapid boot process and snappy action has made it my favourite operating system (while I continue to run Win XP and Mac OS on other machines). The sense of non-commercialism is also nice.…
Let me tell you a story. It starts in the summer of 2007, when the living was easy, credit hadn't crunched, and I had a spare £1,000 in my bank account. I decided I needed a laptop as I was travelling down to London regularly to be an awesome science punk. I could have got some ugly-ass brick…

I have been taking pictures to share with you but unfortunately, forgot the equipment necessary to download the images from my camera to my laptop, so we all will have to wait a little while longer. I am disappointed by this because London is so story-book magical and you all just have to see it! I…

HI Alex,
Thought this little Perspectives article on evolution "Darwin for All Seasons" by Eörs Szathmáry might be interesting?

Napalm is not cool. After your anti-neocon rant, I'm surprised. (It's time for me to go home and play Doom ... )

Thanks Jen I'll have to take a look at it (PS sorry I haven't emailed back - but we'll be here in Boston that weekend and it would be great to get together).

I'm using our almost-dead desktop. Tomorrow I'll try to get through my emails ...
