Time for another mystery campus:

hint: Powering all life

I'll confirm that what must be shown over the weekend.

More like this

Well you guys have been pretty good at guessing the mystery campus. But in addition I'd like you to tell me the answer to the riddle/hint. (Last week no one really explained what the first part of the riddle meant - even after Bil posted an additional hint in the comment section.) So here is this…
This week's mystery campus: hint: It swallowed the pill-designers (Lately it has been swallowing many RNA researchers). Since I'm about to leave for NYC for the weekend, I'll confirm any correct answers next week.
As we correct for the earth's rotation by adding a leap day, I'll add an extra campus to this week's edition of Map That Campus. (Yes two for the price of one!) Here's the first mystery campus: And below the fold is the second mystery campus: hint: Even Possibilities unseen require Some…
The first Map that Campus of 2008. My apologies to the NU posse who have been patiently waiting not to see their alma mater. And so without wasting any more words, here is this week's mystery campus: hint: It's definitely not on Mike Huckabee's campaign tour! Leave your answer in the comments…

This is an easy one for me. Far above Cayuga's waters...
The hint refers to Bethe?

This photo is outdated. The leftmost of the 3 athletic practice fields (dead center) has been replaced by a very large research building. Also, it is snowing right now.

The basketball team is leading the Ivy League right now, and has a home game against Yale tonight.

hint: Powering all life

This must be a reference to Lynn Margulis' talk last week (Feb 14, 2008) as part of Darwin Days. She spoke mostly about endosymbiosis, the theory that certain eukaryotic organelles, including mitochondria and chloroplasts, are the descendants of captured bacteria.

Carl Sagan's (former) house is visible just about Ithaca Falls, and his burial plot is near the upper left edge of the image.

hint: Powering all life

This must be it: Nanomotors

ITHACA, N.Y. --Coupling the organic and inorganic, biological engineers at Cornell University have demonstrated the feasibility of extremely small, self-propelled bionic machines that do their builders' bidding in plant and animal cells, including those in humans.

Such machines could travel through the body, functioning as mobile pharmacies, for example, dispensing precise doses of chemotherapy drugs exclusively to cancer cells.

Just how old is that image anyway? I don't see the Robert J. Kane Sports Complex.

Does this have something to do with Ef Racker's discovery of the F1 subunit of ATP synthase?

OK I'll end the misery - Cornell is the answer. The hint refers to Bethe, and the last line "what must be shown" refers to another famous Cornell prof who was a Nobel laureate.

I like that Margulis was implicated (although she's at U Mass and I guess gave a recent lecture at Cornell.)

So how old is the photo?

I'm not sure what the resolution is, you'll have to ask Yahoo. Incidentally, Google Maps only has a very low resolution photo of Ithaca - if I were you I'd give those guys hell!

The low resolution mapping is a matter of national security. After 9-11 there was a great deal of concern that terrorists would take an interest in blowing up waterfalls.
