This is a beautiful snapshot of Providence Canyon, right here in Georgia, believe it or not. The state parks down here seem to be a bit different from the fare up north. Can't wait to poke around a bit.
Here's another interesting park I found, Panola Mountain, which contains a 100-acre granite monadnock.

The declining scientific content expressed by the National Park Service has been an issue for years; the latest complaints (that I wrote about, and that Wesley Elsberry has now brought up) are just recent flareups of awareness. The National Park Service seems determined to strip out anything…
The current "Ask a ScienceBlogger" opens a big can of worms:
I heard that within 15 years, global warming will have made Napa County too hot to grow good wine grapes. Is that true? What other changes are we going to see during our lifetimes because of global warming?

Why is it always bagpipes?
One of the big temporal landmarks of the recent stretch without photo-blogging posts was "Niska-Day," the annual community festival here. This kicks off with a parade, the route for which comes right…
I finally had a chance to get out to Sweetwater Creek State Park last week, and we picked a perfect day for it. It was warm and slightly muggy, just the type of weather to bring out some of the Georgia wildlife I've been looking forward to seeing. Unfortunately, I wasn't quick enough to film them,…
I was at Providence Canyon in June 2004. It's a beautiful and fascinating place. The canyon started forming only about 130 years ago, caused by rapid erosion after the land was cleared for farming. Creationists predictably claim that this means the Grand Canyon is very young, too. But I was glad to see that apparently none of the exhibits or materials in the visitor's center try to suggest anything of the sort.
The southeast is beautiful! You also need to check out the Cohutta Wilderness in north Georgia.
