Things that are FREAKIN' brilliant (or sometimes the best devices are the simple ones - plus a bit about Star Wars)

So like, I'm not a big fan of making lunches for my children, and in my household we actually alternate that chore between the two of us (If Kate is doing bedtime stories, I'm on lunches, etc). In fact, on the days when the daycare or school is doing a "hot lunch" or it happens to be "Hot Dog" day or whatever, and it works out to be on the day you're suppose to make the lunch, then it's like time for a goddamn happy dance! Much merriment. Seriously.

Anyway, because of this, I just want to say a few words of thanks to the Starfrit company for one of their products. No, it's not the Apple Peeler that you see above, but the "addition" that comes with the peeler itself.

Yes, we're talking about the "Apple Slicer" which has to be the "best thing ever" (man, those words just do not express my giddiness over this thing - let me say it again, and in capital letters - BEST THING EVER!).

Here it is in action:

See the level on the right hand side? - that's to show it works best on a level surface (this is ScienceBlogs afterall). And really now, I want to know who is the brilliant mind who came up with this wondrous thing? If I were to guess, if I were to be (say) forced to think of a designer, say with a gun on head and stuff, well, then that's easy...

...It's obviously George Lucas. So obviously a Star Wars inspired thing. Looky here at a schematic of a Tie Fighter.

(Do you not see the StarFrit Apple Slicer?!?)

So listen here, Mr Lucas, Mr Starfrit - I think we got a winning combination here. That's right, I'm talking about a Tie Fighter Apple Slicer. Leave a comment and we'll get in touch. This is just too good an opportunity to miss...

The Thanksgiving advice from Making Light got here too late to do us any good, but we had a fine first Thanksgiving anyway. My parents, sister, grandmother, and one of my great-aunts came up from New York, and Kate's parents came up from Boston, so we packed nine people into our smallish house,…
It's college application season, and the New York Times style section ran a nice article Sunday about parents touring colleges with their children. It's mostly about the bonding that goes on on such trips, which is probably instantly recognizable if you're the sort of wealthy Northeasterner who is…
Your Hate Mail Will be Graded: A Decade of Whatever, 1998-2008 is a collection of John Scalzi's favourite posts from the first decade of his blog's existence. And it's quite a collection too -- of course one that is best taken in short doses, one or two posts per day over a longish period of time…
I feel a little bad sometimes that I don't really give the Pip his due on the blog. Back when SteelyKid was a toddler and pre-schooler, I had a lot more free time in which to transcribe the various conversations I had with her into super-cute blog posts. The Pip is in the same sort of stage now,…

Nuts. NUTS! And apples. And, pure brilliance indeed. Doh.

I would so buy the Apple Peeler if it came with a tie fighter apple slicer. Maybe, when you press down on the tie fighter (to slice the apple), Darth Vader can pop up the top.

My better half is a total fan of the apple slicer. Me, I like my citrus juicer (pictured near the bottom of this post).

I hate to disillusion you, but the apple slicer (and peeler too, for that matter) are *old* technology. My grandmother had a similarly designed slicer, made of tinned steel, in her kitchen drawer when I was a kid back in the 1940s. I suspect we are seeing newer versions since original patents expired.

maybe it's a US v Canada thing, chezjake? you know Dave, the Canadian, I think they're just now getting the internet up there.

Me, I'm so lazy that I homeschool my children so I won't have to pack them lunches ;)

Chezjake is right though apple slicers and peelers have been around forever. But the TIE apple slicer, that is an intriguing idea.

Apple slice: yes.

Apple peeler: no. Apple peels are good and good for you.
