As Atrios has occasionally pointed out, it's the financial equivalent of a game of Jenga. Last night they took out a significant piece (Lehman Brothers). Several other pieces (AIG, Washington Mutual, Wachovia, and several others) will likely be removed soon. Eventually the tower (financial system) is going to topple. It's not clear yet which piece will do the trick.
