online Feynman lecture videos
- via the Pontiff, so I do not have to link directly to M$
- I sat through a number of lectures by Feynman, graduate level, not intro ugrad;
yes, he really was that good, though at the time I wondered how much of it was superficial experiential impression, only years later when I had occasion to go through a lot of my notes from his class did I appreciate how much deep knowledge I had actually acquired from Feynman's class,
or so I like to think...

Why Mark won't be going to his high school reunion - powerful and sobering blog post - with comment overflow here
- this is actually a scary glimpse into the nether regions of US K-12 education,
I have to confess that apart from bad '80s movies I have essentially no appreciation for the concept of the "high school reunion", and I found the presence of a couple of Icelanders on the comment thread a worrying sign of the "americanization" of the Icelandic school system.

Talking of things 25 year past... - I guess I will not, yet, be getting a kindle - here's hoping for repeal of the DMCA and some sane reform of copyright

The Grauniad argues for a Golden Age in UK Hard Sci-Fi
- now I wouldn't have lead off with Peter "Peterborough Boy" Hamilton meself.
His books are entertaining, long, operatic, long, hard - in a teenage male readership sort of way - and did I mention long?
But to not mention Stross or Reynolds is just farcical, and very Grauniadesque

Scalzi tries to stand up for the honour of the US contingent

This isn't the first time I've mentioned Parasitic Wasps. They're a rude sort of parasite, laying their eggs inside unwitting hosts to grow up and eat them from the inside out. While it sounds gross and, frankly, a little evil, it makes them also really good at one thing: biocontrol. When Sarah…

One of Bob's ideas were put on the ballot in 08. There was a plan that would save 2-3 billion a year in prison costs by putting first time drug offenders in rehab instead of prison. It failed, of course. I think that, at least on drug issues, this will change. Too many of the younger generation see drug use as something that everyone does and there is nothing wrong with.

I was thinking today how many title's have been transfered by company's being sold instead of the property being sold. That would be a great way around Prop. 13.

I was surprised at the lack of Stross and Reynolds too - their SF is great stuff to read. In all fairness, there was an article from Reynolds from the Grauniad page, and I'd also quibble over Peter Hamilton as being good sci-fi. Great fantasy, perhaps, but not sci-fi.

As for the 25 year reunion thing, I'd be completely at a loss as to why I'd want to hang out with the high school crowd. Facebook has been an excellent tool for an expat like me, and has pretty much nixed any interest on the reunion front.
