cricket crawl

Splendid Idea.

NYC cricket crawl.
Bring a bit of culture to the Big Apple.

I must say, though, I didn't think there'd be enough matches in NYC on a given day to make it worthwhile, even if you count limited over matches...

Make mine a Pimm's.

Over at Skulls in the Stars, gg has a very good response to the polemic about the dullness of modern science that I talked about a few days ago. He takes issue with the claim that modern science is "dull" compared to some past Golden Age, and does a good job of it-- go read it. I think he makes…
A nice interview with Jimi Hendrix's sister Janie on the Bravewords.com site. It's talking about the latest collection of unreleased Hendrix material to hit the stores, Valleys Of Neptune. Janie Hendrix: "He's probably laughing." BraveWords.com: Yeah, he must be laughing, going, "how can I be…
The Give Up Blog has a post outlining a general problem: denialists. The author is putting together a list of common tactics used by denialists of all stripes, whether they're trying to pretend global warming isn't happening, Hitler didn't kill all those Jews, or evolution is a hoax, and they…

Pimm's? Bah! You've a better chance of scoring some spicy curry, because cricket's just an Indian game that was accidentally discovered by the English. The Pimm's crowd does regularly complain about a bug called the Delhi Belly whenever they stumble on tour, which is not infrequent.

But if there is any crawling involved this soporific son of hypnos must be involved.

Variety, please.
One does not go to watch the match or anything so uncouth, well, maybe intermittently should one care about the score.

Start with some crustless cucumber sandwiches, and a Pimm's or maybe a light white. Move on to strawberries and cream, with champagne, of course. Then maybe a khorma or biryani with Kingfisher...

By the time you're onto the vindaloo, well it really doesn't matter much what you drink as long as it is cool, frothy and lots of it.

Then, of course it is time for Pimm's again - for breakfast, and the next day of matches.

Excellent culinary and anesthetic plan (even if Shaw was slightly unfair in singling out cricket as twenty two people playing the fool, twenty two thousand watching the fools).

The Kingfisher bit might need revision though. It's busy sinking money into F1 cars that come in a thrilling 12th and running an excellent airline with fine service that does what airlines do best, lose money.

I suggest picking an alternate "Indian made foreign liquor". That is an honest to goodness government recognized term!

What Arunav said. 95% of the cricket-playing population lives in a country that borders the Indian Ocean. Recent debacle aside, you might as well merge the English and West Indian teams to form a "random islands of the Atlantic" team...

You should pay more attention Arunav, England 2-Australia 1 in the ashes series, have you beaten the aussies recently?

Andrew as a self-respecting cricket fan, of course I knew. Well played!

Aus in Ind 2008 Ind 2 - Aus 0 in 4. Cricketwise Aus vs Ind has been the premier series in recent times, consistently competitive since ~2001.

The collective English amnesia regarding normal service in another Ashes series between 2005 and 2009 (cough! 5-0!) has been highly amusing.
