At least you didn't get "London Calling."

Given your interests in reactors and policy I am curious to hear what you think about the Japanese emergency. I just read that they are attempting to cool the cores with boron-laced seawater (which they are injecting with "firefighting equipment" ?!! according to the Times). It seems to me that resorting to this means the situation is desperate - among other things, introducing salt water into the core must mean completely giving up maintaining the integrity of the fuel rods and cladding.

Between being way too busy, and crisis fatigue, I have not been able to put much coherent stuff together.

I actually did some kibbitzing on Mark I BWRs on CR last night, maybe I'll put something together here.

Basically, yeah, the cores have broken rods and lost primary coolant. Don't have enough info to know if scramming failed (too slow?) and if any parts of the core still have criticality.

This is a bit worse than Three Mile Island, but likely pretty mild in terms of probable public health impact.
Bad psychology though.
