Music Meme

OK, fine.

1. Total volume of music on my pc: About 12Gb---all of my CDs and LPs converted to Ogg. This is just a back up, since I just play the songs on my Iriver player.

2. Songs playing right now: Steel Monkey by Jethro Tull.

3. Last album purchased: Dial a Song by They Might be Giants

4. Seven songs I've listened to a lot lately, from several genres:

  1. Helpless by kd lang
  2. When Doves Cry by Prince
  3. Van Diemen's Land by U2
  4. Sounds of Then by GANGgajang
  5. Imitation of Life by R.E.M.
  6. Irving Berlin by Ian Tyson
  7. Bob by Weird Al Yankovic

5. Pass this on to five victims: I don't think so.

PhysioProf tagged me using his Feministe guest blogger bully-pulpit. The idea is to identify the five most embarrassing tracks on your iPod. (Since I use the iTunes library on my iBook more than my iPod, that's what I used.) This was harder than it might have been. It turns out, when it comes to…
One of the great things about blogging is that I can do things that I always wanted to do but would never get hired in a million years to do, for example, to be a rock critic. Prior to blogging, the only time I ever got to indulge my critic wannabe side was in high school, where I wrote a couple of…
So, what are the results of the Christmas Tunes Experiment? I've had a playlist of the songs on the Jefitoblog Holidy Mix Tape (plus a few other things) locked into the iTunes Party Shuffle while I work on the computer at home. At work, I stuck with the usual four-and-five-star playlist in the lab…
Over at The World's Fair, David Ng is sorting his records autobiographically, and encouraging others to do the same: If you make a music mix that is a reflection of your informative years, what would those dozen or so songs be, and maybe more interesting, why? You don't have to be proud of the song…

Wow, just when I thought the comments couldn't get any more acrimonious, Tim brings up popular music and we enter "Your favorite band sucks" territory. Anyway, it's a slow work day so and I haven't commented in a while (I'm sure I've been missed) so I'll start.

Steel Monkey by Jethro Tull - Tull always reminded me of Traffic, except they sucked
Dial a Song by They Might be Giants - Anti-Rock for Anti-Rockers. Beneath contempt
Helpless by kd lang - Underrated artist, should be much bigger than she is
When Doves Cry by Prince - Proof positive that the 80s were the all time low point for R&B
Van Diemen's Land by U2 - One of their best. Makes me wonder Edge didn't sing more stuff for U2
Sounds of Then by GANGgajang - Don't know that one
Imitation of Life by R.E.M.- Did aliens kidnap the real R.E.M. after Green? They've been a pathetic self-parody for 15 years
Irving Berlin by Ian Tyson - Don't know that one
Bob by Weird Al Yankovic - Don't know that one either, but if it's Weird Al, I'm sure it's funny as hell

Anyway, here's what's in my car right now so Tim can take a shot at me if he likes:
The Cult - Dreamtime
Peter Gabriel - 2nd Album (Fingernails)
Jet - Get Born
Sugar - Copper Blue
Have a good weekend everybody :-)

What I'm listening to right now, dammit

Scott... Jet? Fair dinkum? Jet? (I rather liked your list, Tim, but "Imitation of Life" has to be one of the worst R.E.M. songs I've ever heard.)

For what it's worth, recently listened to:
Unknown - "Death and the Maiden" (Schubert)
Johnny High Ground - "Bad Girl"
INXS - "Original Sin"
Poe - "Today"
Pulp - "Disco 2000"
Bjork - "hyper-ballad"
Takako Nishizaki - "Violin Concerto in A minor" (Bach)

(I have no idea to reference classical music in this context.)

also, Ian Tyson land is kd lang land. I forgot to brag.
