Chemistry-Physics Recruiting Video

Today is show-n-tell day (at least for this blog). Our department (Chemistry and Physics) has recently been focusing on increasing our undergraduate enrollment. One of the steps we have taken is to have the following video created. I think it is pretty good.

Southeastern Louisiana University Chemistry and Physics from SELU Chem and Phys on Vimeo.

If you are a chemist, the first thing you are going to say is "what is up with the green bubbling liquid?" You are right, that is fake. Sometimes these video people want stuff that looks cool.

I am not a boy scout, but I still believe it is a good idea to be prepared. What to prepare for? Well, in Louisiana, it is the time to prepare for hurricanes and the looming budgetpocolypse. Hurricanes First, the hurricanes and tropical storms. Model image from Weather Underground - best place…
Yes, green laser pointers are cool. Especially when you use them to make stuff fluoresce. Ok, what about a blue laser pointer? They are getting surprisingly cheap (Amazon has a 10 mW for pretty cheap). Still not cheap enough for me. But, you know what? Some of the physics majors here at…

The June 25th issue of Chemical & Engineering News has two pieces that talk about ways people are using features of the "new internet" (or Web 2.0) to disseminate and explore chemistry online. Celia Henry Arnaud's article "A New Science Channel" looks at efforts scientists and scientific…

It's a good video, but it needs explosions. (Kidding, but I'm a chemist, and former lecturer, and the "energetic reactions" were always good for getting students to pay attention) At least they didn't want to put dry ice in the useless green goo.

And thankfully, whenever they were working, they were wearing safety glasses!!! Yea Safety!!!1

The lady's reaction shown through her eyes at about 00:25 was priceless when the other person lifted something, like "Oh no, what are you doing?"
