PERVs in your pork chops

Well this is a new one:

This will sound radical to most of you, but the latest information available to us now could improve your health, should you decide to take this seriously.

Have you ever considered why Muslims and Jews are forbidden from eating pork?  Both religions consider it unclean.  Dr. Jeff McCombs, author of the book “Life Force,” found that by eliminating pork, there is a consequent and immediate increase in energy and health levels as well as the body’s disease-fighting capabilities.

According to health experts, the danger of eating pork is an unseen one—a retrovirus called porcine endogenous.  While scientists still have no idea how this retrovirus worked in humans, what is known is that it can withstand heating and cooking at extreme temperatures. Brown University reported that retroviruses can dramatically affect the body’s ability to fight off diseases.

There are transposable elements, pirate DNA, in everything we eat.

Everything.

In pigs, there are lots of transposable elements, including endogenous retroviruses.  Most PERVs, like most human ERVs, do not have the ability to code for functional viruses anymore.  Because we have a lot of similarities (physiological, immunological, etc) to pigs, there is some concern that PERVs could cause trouble in humans after xenotransplants.  This concern has been investigated, and determined to be a very, very, very low risk risk.

Considering that retroviruses are incredibly delicate, the chances of a PERV successfully assembling, surviving through meat processing/transportation/storage on the shelf at the store/cooking, is infinitesimally small.  There is also no evidence that a PERV has infected a human, anywhere, ever, including via food.

I dont care if someone doesnt want to eat pork.

But dont try to justify your decision with endogenous retroviruses.

Best title ever?

This sounds like another example of a PRRJ (pseudoscientific religious retro-justification).

The titles to PERV posts pretty much write themselves... :-D

And geez, Kevin! ROFL!!!

bacon

No way I'm gonna give up bacon... 'sides, bacon is best cooked crispy anyway, so what's the odds of the pest surviving such high heat?

Those anti-bacon-ers are just jealous, 'cause they can't eat a wonderful food group*.

Silly idjits.

* bacon, the best food group. Don't believe me? Ask Arnie!

If their god hadn't wanted me to eat bacon then he wouldn't have made it out of bacon, dammit!

Does this guy give any explanation why PERVs are supposed to be worse than cow ERVs, chicken ERVs, equine ERVs &c.?

Re: herr doktor bimler.

Magic.

It's magic, I tells ya-- just like it was magic when gawd barfed up teh earths back in teh day.

Magic. That's what makes porcine PERVs more .. magical, than other sorts.

Just ask any bacon-denier.

(hint: they frequently use a different word for when they mean "magic" but make no mistake-- it's magic all the way down for these nutters.)

Hey Abbie. Are you knowledgeable enough to do a post on the merits of this aerial pesticide spray against West Nile being considered or done in a number of cities?

I'm in Dallas, and we're having a giant hubbub about it. Would like your thoughts.

And this is the best way I could come up with asking you.

Perhaps reporter Quinino can perform the religion -> chiropractor -> sciency babbling trick with shatnez next (mutatis mutandis silk).

I guess the ERVs in lobster and squid must be really really bad to explain the seafood restrictions.
