Shaken up.

Just had an earthquake here. I'll post the USGS data on it when I have it.

UPDATE: Preliminary estimates put the magnitude at 4+. And more than 1000 people filed reports within about 10 minutes of the shaking.

We Californians are well trained.

Some readers have been emailing me about the Utah mine disaster saying the mine owners are using some seriously fishy arguments. I am in no way shape or form a geologist, but after reading the coverage of the Utah mine collapse I can't help thinking the CEO saying it was an earthquake - not a mine…
It's been two years* since the ground opened near Sidoarjo, Indonesia, spewing mud over the homes, farms, and businesses of tens of thousands of people. The disaster quickly acquired the rather endearing name of "Lusi", which is short for "lumpur" (Indonesian for mud) and "Sidoarjo". The two-year…
OK, I don't actually believe in earthquake weather, but it was really hot today and the house just shook. (I could see the shaking as well as feel it.) I'm going to check what others are reporting to the USGS. Be right back. UPDATE: So far, it seems to be a magnitude 4 or so -- a wee temblor.…
I have finally gotten together enough to create a Google Earth image (below) of the location of the Saudi Arabian earthquakes and their depths/magnitudes. I only have the data from the USGS earthquake list, but it is very illuminating: Harrat Lunayyir volcano in western Saudi Arabia from Google…

Grrr. Jealousy. I slept through the only earthquake I was ever close enough to to feel (or rather, I half woke up and convinced myself that I was dreaming).

The USGS has more information here.

I thought my solutions were all shaking. Then GC called me and said "we just had an earthqauke." Then I put two and two together. I filed a report too!

We did? Huh. I was dead to the world, and my cats clearly didn't give a crap. I am NOT well-trained in these things.

Probably not enough to impress Uncle Fishy, but enough to cause me concern for the West Coast contingent. Hopefully it will be an isolated event.

Keep in touch.

Sigh. I live in the Bay Area for 2.5 years now, and never felt an earthquake. I should have felt this one, but missed it again. I live ca. 15 miles from the centre.

Mustafa, even the vaunted Brad deLong gives his imprimatur.

Didn't register here at my little nexus of 94062, but the house is on a ridge of what passes for bedrock here.

Funny earthquake story from (I think) 1982: I was working in Santa Clara and was on the phone with a colleague in Fremont. She gasped, "An earthquake! A big one!" I had time to say, "Nonsense, probably a big truck" and then "Oh my! The cars in the parking lot are doing the hula!"

I slammed the phone down and booked out of the building -- old, and not yet retrofitted.

Some books bounced off of shelves and so on, but the building's owner got more motivated about retrofitting after that.
