Ecology Blogs

My call for ecology blogs went better than expected. I expected next to nothing, but I got more than nothing -- at least enough to consider it further away from nothing than next to it. Anyhow, I have compiled a list of blogs below the fold. They are grouped into those that deal with the science of ecology and those that deal with conservation, environmentalism, bird watching, etc. Some of the blogs were on the boarder between science and other, and I can't give a great explanation for how I decided where to put them. The order is somewhat arbitrary; it's the order in which I put toghether the list, which depended on from where I got the links and in what order they were presented to me.

One last blog that should be an ecology blog, but currently is not: Salamander Candy. Those guys are molecular ecologists, but they don't seem to blog about ecology. C'mon guys, there's a niche to be filled. And even if there weren't, you've got the skillz to construct that niche.

A good one just folded today. Luckily, he is not deleting the blog so one can still search his archives for some good environmental science and ecology of water.

One that is promising but still a small blog, is Mon@rch's Nature blog. The blog's proprietor is a bird bander; currently the crew leader for a Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) station; Principal Investigator in looking at the changing butterfly fauna in Allegany State Park, NY and the status and ecology of the Northern Saw-whet Owl in Allegany State Park, NY.

It's nice to see so many great ecology blogs out there. Thanks for the listing RPM.

Jen (from http://infinitesphere.blogspot.com, a great ecology blog) and I are putting the final touches on Oekologie - http://oekologie.wordpress.com - an ecology and environmental science blog carnival. We're still in the process of setting up, but we are looking for hosts starting next March and on. The carnival itself will hopefully start by mid January or February.

Shameless plug, I know. I just thought that while we're on the subject...

Thanks for believing in us, RPM. I'd actually call myself an evolutionary biologist, or a geneticist, before pretending to be a real ecologist, but we can certainly do a little more ecology blogging. That's molecular ecology (as in DNA molecules), we don't know jack about, say, nutrient cycling.

I'd like to volunteer my blog. It was also mentioned by the estimable postblogger on the previous post. I try to cover ecology and evolution in general, but I am particularly interested in macroecology - the search for large-scale patterns and generalities in nature, and their explanations. I do sometimes wander off-message and mention any other stuff that takes my eye, however.

I'd like to draw your attention to the Blog of the British Ecological Society. The Blog aims to increase the flow of information between scientists and policy makers. Any comments on the posts would be welcome.
