Design of the (bionic) eye

James Randerson, at the GrauniadGuardian blog site makes an interesting point about the new bionic eye. It's only a 4x4 grid of monochrome pixels, but it's revolutionised the life of a blind man. Of what use is 1/2^n of an eye? Well it's enough to navigate. Randerson points out that this totally demolishes the ID argument. So it's not only a cool invention, but a great rebuttal.

Vision is one of the first and most useful applications of bionic systems. Our eyes, while they are wonderful, still suck, and are worse than octopus eyes. For a start, the optic nerves in humans go over the retina obstructing light instead of behind it. They then plunge through the retina creating…
Christopher Hitchens was impressed by the existence of blind cave organisms, and wrote that they argue against a linear progression in evolution. He's quite right; creationism doesn't explain why their god tossed in to salamanders and fish a collection of complex developmental mechanisms that the…
It occurred to me over the weekend that I hadn't updated my Medicine and Evolution series in a while. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about a couple of clueless creationists who had wildly misinterpreted a recent paper about how the cornea prevents blood vessels from growing into it from the…

I might have stunned couple local creationists some bit when I mentioned that a) my aunt's cat (cataract in another eye) catches mice in dark winter and b)I know an one-eye(another eye made of glass) guy who is excellent excavator driver, one of the best drivers in our province. One of those creationists had just boasted about his two eyes and ears that how vital they are for 3D pictures, stereophonic etc ..:D
