Give Congressman Reyes A Big Fat "F" for Failure

US Congressman, Silvestre Reyes, a Texas Democrat, claimed that al-Qaeda was a predominantly Shia organisation. But the opposite is true -- al-Qaeda are Sunni extremists.

Because Mr Reyes is a long-time member of the House Intelligence Committee and will become its new chairman in January, you'd expect he would know this. Like, hello!

The Committee is regularly briefed on intelligence matters and is responsible for the budgets, organisation and overall direction of US spy agencies.

Hence you would expect Mr Reyes to be pretty well informed.

But when an interviewer tested him on basic knowledge of US enemies, he seemed anything but.

When asked whether al-Qaeda was a Sunni or a Shia group, Mr Reyes answered that it was predominantly Shia.

When Mr Reyes was asked whether Hezbollah was Sunni or Shia, he appeared unable to answer.

Hezbollah is, of course, a Shia organisation.

Tell me, do they put something into the water in Texas?

Err, this is why I go to college in Pennsylvania. My mother wonders why I didn't send a single application out to a state school, but this a good example as to why: even our Democrats are stupid.

I don't think you could find a single politician in Washington who actually does know that, though.

Yeah - it's not just Texas, it's not even mostly Texas. Way too many people in this country - let alone administration - not only don't know who's Shia and who's Sunni (let's not even ask about Alawi, for crying out loud), they don't know why it matters. They think it's like Presbies and Methodists or something. Then you can add those who think the Iranians are Arabs, and begin to comprehend why everything we do over there turns to shit almost immediately.
