Free Avian Anatomy Handbook

tags: , , , ,

For those of you who study birds or who like to look at them, Julian Baumel's celebrated Handbook of Avian Anatomy: Nomina Anatomica Avium, 2nd Edition, published in 1993 by the Nuttal Ornithological Club, is now available as a free PDF download. It's a big file (400 pages; 49MB), so it might take some time to download, but it is free (shall I add that even though Julian Baumel was retired at the time, he came out of retirement for a short time to guest lecture the anatomy lab portion of my Ornithology course, and he was a tremendously knowledgeable and entertaining lecturer, too).

NOTE: on 28 May 2008, I uploaded this scanned PDF to RapidShare for all of you since it appears that I am the only source for this book on the internet [scanned Baumel Avian Anatomy PDF 49MB].

the file is still there. i don't know of an alternative source for it .. perhaps you can use a different computer for the download?

I didn't see anything to click to get the download...is it one of the kinds of sites where you go to the page and then just wait while it downloads automatically?

I am one of the senior authors of the NAA and know nothing of the handbook having been made available for downloading. If this does exist, then there are at least 3 of us who have co-authored this text and were not informed that it would be available in this format. There is new data that could be added if we knew how to access the database. The publisher informed me several years ago that the original plates are not with the publisher!

Any further information would be much appreciated!
