Due to my spending an unhealthy amount of time in political debate areas, my first thought on hearing the word family is 'What are they trying to do now?' Its one of those codewords, used by on area of politics to communicate a message to their allies while diverting attention from its shadier sides.
So to me, 'family' means 'anti-gay-marriage' or 'pro-media-regulation' or 'anti-contraception' or 'pro-life' or 'anti-public-education' or 'anti-cabon-control' or any one of perhaps hundreds of other political positions - a lot of which have little if any connection to family.
Its interesting that by appropriating the word family as a political tool, those who call themselves pro-family have ruined the term for everyone by laying it with political implications.
