Or one of those large wooden cable spools that workmen carelessly leave lying around.

Not that I would know anything about the dramatic splintery demise of such large wooden spools, following late-night hallway spool races and an unfortunate turn over a railing and down the center of a 5-story stairwell. No YouTube in those days, fortunately.
