Wilson's snipe

tags: , , , ,

A long-time reader, Jerry, sent some images for me to feature as the "image of the day". He referred to these as "some friends to help you tend your wing".

Wilson's snipe, Gallinago delicata. It is a little unusual to see a shorebird off the the ground, but this fellow decided he needed a higher perch to take in some of the scenery.

Perhaps she (or he) is nervous that Snipe Hunting season is coming up soon...

Greg's comment reminds me of my teenage years.

Did any of you participate in a snipe hunt? As a teenager I remember some of us at a party organized a snipe hunt. Some party goers were told to make noise in the woods to scare the snipe, and the other group had bags to catch the snipe. Of course there never were any snipe. Then the organizers ran back to the party leaving the rest of the group hunting for snipe. At the time those of us playing the practical joke thought it was hilarious.
